Eels

GOing to try eels this weekend for the first time. A few questions.

1.) What is the best way to store them? We'll be on a small aluminum boat.

2.) What's the best method as far as a set-up? Size hooks, etc. Should I use a sinker or just let it swim, drift on its own?

3.) Where should I hook them? Throgh the jaw, top of the head?

Any other helpful hints much appreciated. Thanks!

Keep them in a bucket or soft cooler with a frozen bottle of water.

Hold them with green "scrubby" pads

I use 7/0 Gamakatsu Circle hooks

Hooked up through jaw and out an eye socket

Set up near some rocks or a river mouth and hang on

not much to add there...

Yup that about sums it up... After a drift reel VERY SLOW.

Don't let the line go slack for too long or you'll get a nice eel ball.

Also, when you get a hit, drop the rod tip, when you feel weight again, set the hook.

Go to the FAQ's forum. There is an awesome thread on eeling there. It will answer all of your questions. Good luck, catch large!!

jaywalker33, I'm local to ya and I've got a nice eel bucket that works well for boats. Since it won't be seeing action on my end this weekend, you're welcome to borrow it. It'll give you an idea of how to make your own. Cheap and simple to make.

Thanks for the info guys. BigBo, I'm heading down the Cape straight from work but I appreciate the offer. We'll be fishing in Buz Bay towards the West End of the canal, there's a few rockpiles and dropoffs that I want to try. Haven't taken any keepers out of there in a while, ton of fish but most are schoolies. Anyway I'll check out the FAQ section for more on eelin. I'll let you guys know how I do. Thanks again. :thanks:
