I always considered the best country, bands like the Outlaws (Breaker, Breaker or Green Grass and High Tides), or Commander Cody (Momma Hated Diesels So Bad).

"Green Grass and High Tides Forever" is one of the best songs ever written, but it's southern rock...not country!
