PowerPro or Mono
I'm having a tough time lately...I"m using 40# PowerPro and loving it, only it isn't loving the rocks very much. At the light on the hill I lost 3 atoms poppers because of fish making a bee-line behind a rock after hooking them. I'm using 50# Ande when the blues aren't in thick, switch to wire leader when they are.
Any advice? I'm not sure if I should switch out or not. Thanks |

I use braid on the sand and mono near the rocks for that reason.

Around rocks, which is pretty much the norm for me, I have no problem with 50# Power Pro and an 8-10' 50# Mono leader tied on with an albrite knot.

stay with mono around rocks, braid is at its best fishing the sand. If you want your best shot at landing a big fish in a junkyard of boulders...dont rely on braid..sooner or later you will have problems with it in the rocks

Thumbs way down for braid and rocks. I've lost way too much. Trying mono now -- just respooled.

Fireline and an extra spool with 20lb test Big Game for just such occasions. :D

Would you believe I use 60 pound mono and a 100 pound leader on a coventional . The really big ones still rock up and break off. :alien:

What reel?

I use braid with a long mono leader on my non levelwind reel. Bring the leader back into the reel if you are using a conventional reel. I use 40 pound power pro with a 30 pound leader allowing a breakoff when I get hung up bouncing the bottom and 65 pound power pro when jigging eelskins or heavy bucktail jigs with a 30 or 40 pound leader. I have never lost a fish due to chafing on the rocks using that setup.
I do use the old standby Ande mono when plugging - I plug with a levelwind reel, cannot plug and watch the lure and concentrate on the plug's action. I think most fishermen have spent a good amount of money on line trying to find their ideal combo. Just as an afterthought, I have found the alberto knot to be one of the best for mono leader to braid line. It is a smooth knot and will not hang up on guides or mung when tied properly. Just my opinion! :jump: |
So what do you guys recommend? I've got 9, 10 & 12 foot spinning set ups. I think a heavy mono is going to severely limit my casting ability....

Suffix has just started making braid and i was just givin a free spool to try out- so far i love it. its very very supple... holds knots nice and its thinner than power pro. I think im hooked.
theres also a cool new mono comming out called Gamma that is treated with radiation to make it strong yet soft.... might be a good alternative ot back country if they stop making it as was previously mentioned. |
