Good Reading
 

One of the best ways I find to get thru the nonfishing months (winter) is to read about fishing. Wanted to use this thread for fishing books recomendatations. Here's two real good ones to start. Monster Man the story of Frank Mundos and In The Slick of the Cricket. Both books are about Frank Mondus a crazy SOB but a great charter Captain. I got them on Amazon. Antoher other recomdations out there?:cool:

You could always pick up Frank D's book on self defense :D :jump:

I didn't get the chance to get any good books this year but it might not be too late... Right now, I am re-reading "Black Hawk Down"

One non-fishing but Ocean Going must read is "South" by Earnest Shackleton. He was the captain of a sailing vessel named the Endurance that was trapped in ice as they tried to make the second trip to the South Pole and first trip that would have had two teams trying to reach the South Pole at the same time. After being trapped for months, the ice finally swallowed the ship and they had to man life boats to survive - truly an amazing tale. Not for the reading faint of heart...

Crafty - do me a favor and holler to Iron Mike as I would like to borrow "Reading The Water" by Bob Post from hime to read soon. I've heard a lot of great reviews on that old book and want to give it a try myself...

Will do - I'll try to reach the Iron Man tonite and ask him to bring Post's book along to the meeting tomorrow nite - it's on the lending list and I think DZ just finished it.

I had "The Moon Pulled Up An Acre of Bass" on loan from DZ, which I found a disappointing read.

Boy, I'm glad I'm not the first to chime in with proposed titles for a Frank D. book - I was gonna say "Lassie - Threat or Menace?" but I won't. I'm a big admirer of Frank and his work.

Thanks Crafty.... I found a used copy on Amazon for $135 (paperback) but don't want to drop that level of funds at the moment...

Frank's books really are required reading - all of them.

I've got signed copies of all of his work and rereading them is an annual event for me.

Mr. Fishy, if you haven't read Frank Daignault's books, you absolutely have to. They're at the very top of anybody's list if you fish for striped bass.

anything by Theodore Giesel is a good read . Its my speed for reading . He has at least on book on blue fish .

Some great fishing books: Reading the Water, Shining Tides, Twenty Years on The Cape, and (hopefully to be released in the future - "The Snowstorm Blitz"). If you can't find a copy to buy or borrow then hit your library and ask them to do an inter-library loan.
My favorite all time non-fishing read is "We Were Soldiers Once - And Young" by Moore. An oral history of the Ia Drang valley battle in Vietnam. A movie based on the book is due out next week. This book is hard to put down and is by far the most intense read I've ever had.
Others include "Black Hawk Down" , "Into Thin Air".

Its tough to find the time to read with a 4 year old daughter and a wife who can't sit still long enough to actually watch her.

But, I've read a couple of good books about commercial fishing... not fishing books as was intended in this thread, but good books to get your mind out on the water.

The first was a book called "Cod" that I read last year. It is an interesting look at centuries of cod fishing and how important these fish were economically. It also gives you a good look into the commercial fishing world and the recent collapse of the stocks.

Another I read about a month ago, was "Hungry Ocean" by Linda Greenlaw. I'm sure most of you know that she was captain of the Hannah Boden... the Andrea Gail's sister ship. The book kinda gives a blow by blow of a typical trip out on a swordboat. She also mixes in various stories from other trips out. It was a decent read.

Sorry, fishing books... I found two cool kids books in Florida last year. "Ol' Reddy Drum" and "Billy Bluefish"

These stories chronicle the life and times of an extraordinary redfish and a bluefish who wears a yellow hat that says "billy" on it. Read about them as they try to avoid being caught by evil fishermen and learn various other lessons of life.

Favorite Fiction / Non-Fishing series: The Brotherhood of War - WB Griffin (the first books that had me reading for fun instead of homeowrk ;) )

I have a few others but they generally aren't all that hot so I won't name, loan, or recommend them....

......and although Frank may not have acted like "most" would have liked him to....he shouldn't be discredited. IMO...He's a Great fisherman who's contributed alot to this sport.

Hey Redmond, I already gots "Striped Bass" by Karas... and your right, it has too many words and not enough pictures. It gives me a headache.

Its ok. It has alot of good stuff, but its a bit out of date and it smells like a library book. I actually read it a few years back when I first started fishing with you and don't remember much.

Oh well, I guess I'll buy a bottle of advil and browse thru it again.

i just picked up "striped bass" by nick karas yesterday. one of the books that i would add to the good read list is the "heart of the sea" by nathaniel philbrick. lot of people say melvilles "moby #^&#^&#^&#^&" was based on this true story. really is an incredible story.

Hungry Ocean was a great read, Surfcasters Quest ain't bad - it's all about fishing Block...

That Shackelton adventure was truly extrordinary. Every man in that crew was a hero. Came back with everyone of them, too, which after reading the book and/or watching the Discovery Channel program on the journey is truly mindboggling. Mindboggling, hmmmm, good word.

I was loaned a copy of "Reading the Water" by Bob Post last night and just started reading it - read one chapter before the lids shut down on me....

Crafty - I'm told you are next in line for the book. I also don't know if you saw it but the "Fiesty One" showed up for another pop + after escorting the boss home from choir practice... I ran away as fast as I could ;)

Yeah, I was there cleaning up when the Iron One reappeared, along with Tattoo and Fish_Eye - since we had a quorum of Alliance members ( which is more than one at any given time), I decided to have ONE with the boys.

Fish_Eye told me some story about Habs and The Grapes of Wrath and I suddenly felt like I needed a drink. :D

It was just a short rinse, however - everybody went home nice and peaceful like. You woulda been safe...

Reading The Water is excellent, had been looking for it for years and happen to find one book this winter, which is hardback, they only printed 2000 hardback. Its in mint condition, cost $100, but I just had to have it. It's a great read.

Couple of books I got for Xmas- The Moon Pulled Up An Acre of Bass- wasn't too bad but this is probably a better read for the fly guys.

Striped Bass Strategies, By Saltwater Sportsman, is an excellant read also.

This is not a book but the reading is very good. He writes some interesting things about fishing and the love we have for the striped bass.
