Where is it?

Here's the first clue/picture. Where is this famous fishing spot?

Slipknot 02-26-2002 07:51 AM

West Wall.

JohnR 02-26-2002 08:37 AM

It really looks like Quonnie Breachway with that rock on the bottom left being the "casting rock" - but it's not QB. The background looks wrong for it. Could this spot be somewhere between Beavertail & Westport??

Slip - it's not the West Wall. But are you interested in hitting it in a few weeks??

Slipknot 02-26-2002 08:53 AM

If it's Beavertail, I'd rather be there. But I don't see any green on the rocks.

Fish_Eye 02-26-2002 09:08 AM

Here is a better look at the area:

Saltheart 02-26-2002 11:59 AM

It looks like a manmade structure to me by the shape of the rocks. Too low for Charletown. Background would be diferent from Weekapaug. Background doesn't look right for bevertail. Could very well be Quonny.

JohnR 02-26-2002 12:11 PM

Definitely Man-Made. But it if were Quonny, you would see a lot more of CB & EB, right? Of course, having never stood on the west jetty, I don't know what the view is. It probably is the view from the west side of a breachway to looking at the east side. So if it is a breachway, it has to be Quonny....

The problem is my view is typically from the guy standing on the rock, at night with a sweet SW wind on my right (face) cheek ;)

JHABS 02-26-2002 12:31 PM

maybe WATCH HILL or NARRAGANSET .

schoolie monster 02-26-2002 12:59 PM

John, you were right the first time... I don't think its Quonny. If you were far enough out to see that much shoreline in the background, you'd see all the rocks to the right (right from seaward).

I think JHabs is right... Watch Hill. I've never been to Watch Hill during the day, but of the spots I've fished (Quonny, Watch Hill, Weekapaug, Charlestown) Watch Hill feels right.

Of course, I have a pretty limited resume when talking about RI fishing. It could probably be a dozen spots I've never been to.

Though George Poveromo's show was off of Block Island and I think I recognized the Snake Hole when they showed some overhead shots of the island.

Fishpart 02-26-2002 01:07 PM

I was thinking maybe Watch Hill, but with the tide down as much as it appears to be there probably isn't much water left.

Nice neat rocks though.

Slipknot 02-26-2002 01:07 PM

I'm gonna agree with Habs on Watch Hill. Now that I think about it that big rock looks like the rock I crawled down to to hoist up a 15 lbder and had a wave crash me down, back in the fall. Mike did a good job keeping the fence out of the picture. Was it taken from a boat?

Fish_Eye 02-26-2002 01:10 PM

This should give you the answer for sure.

Slipknot 02-26-2002 02:40 PM

Ah HA, I was right about that rock. I've never been there in the daylight.

Fish_Eye 02-26-2002 03:25 PM

Heck, you can't miss the Hab Guy's Korker marks on the rocks.

John, it didn't take you long to figure this one out.

JohnR 02-26-2002 03:32 PM

Never seen it from that angle! A very wise bird showed me where to go but it wasn't there ;) and it looks very different in the daylight, sorta like a "boater's eye view" :D

Saltheart 02-26-2002 04:45 PM

The mind plays tricks on you. I'm trying to figure where on shore the picture was taken from to get that view but in fact , you weren't standing on shore. Looking back in from a boat , things look different. :)

.... ....sorry Mike......I put a little more bend in their rods...:D

Scotch Bonnet 02-26-2002 05:44 PM

LOOKS FISHY!!!! Hope to be seeing this veiw alot this season. To many seasons looking out from the rocks. Fish Eye - in'' Striper Magic'' you mention ''the most dramatic structure you will ever see'' then go down at slack tide, is that Watch Hill reef?

Fish_Eye 02-26-2002 06:36 PM

Scotch Bonnet,

I've got some "super spicy" jerky for you -- just ask Bloocrab...oh, that wasn't the question -- what's the story with the handle "Scotch Bonnet" -- is it because you're always looking for "hot" fishing spots like in Striper Magic? Although there is plenty of fish activity near the light, the structure there is not that dramatic. If you look at a chart or a satellite image of the area, you'll see that the most significant characteristic of this spot is its location. The reef structure to the west, with Fishers Island Sound pushing current through the area and Block Island Sound with its tidal push all adds up to Watch Hill being a magnet for fish.

The "secret spot" in my Striper Magic video is about 1.5 miles to the west of my second favorite spot ;) . In the next few weeks I'll be giving tips and clues to finding your own fantastic striper honey holes. I've just worked out a sponsorship with Maptech and will be posting both NOAA chart info and new Bathymetric Chart info that should get you folks into the Zone!

Mike - after 20 yrs. in the Produce business I got veggies on the brain( plus I like the HOT stuff). If you see a 21 ft Carolina skiff -SCOTCH BONNET- out of Charlestown ,that be me.

Fishing Watch Hill,Sugar,Catacomb always blows me away and I can't help but wonder what it really looks like down there. I guess thats why I watch your stuff-''Jaws'' ruined me when I was young ,wouldn't be caught dead down there.

Whats the deal with that mast sticking out near Lords Passage? Do you know the history?

Fish_Eye 02-26-2002 10:36 PM

Scotch,

I think you're referring to the "spindle" that is located on Sugar Reef. I'm not sure what the exact story is on the wreck but I know it's a great spot to fish and dive. I once had a striper -- only a little 5 pound sweetheart -- leap out of the water, nearly three feet in the air, to eventually land on a Habs three ounce, pink squid, popper. That would have been a "money shot" , but NO, I had to fish...I just couln't resist all the stripers that were stacked up just on the far side of the rip line.

Here's a look at the infamous stick:

http://fisheye.striped-bass.com/images/feb/stick.jpg

Scotch Bonnet 02-26-2002 11:02 PM

Thats the stick. It gives that rip an eerie apperance. I'm amazed it stays intact with all that water flowing day in day out.'' They don't build boats like they used to''!!!!

Great shot! Thanks!
Chris

Krispy 02-26-2002 11:52 PM

bloocrab 02-27-2002 12:01 AM

It must be uglier than I thought.......

....if your from CT., its a lot closer to you than Ocean Drive....

Krispy 02-27-2002 12:42 AM

Nah, I still think I'm right:D ;)

bloocrab 02-27-2002 12:53 AM

If I'm thinkin about the same corner on Ocean Drive that your thinking about.....would't that point be going in the other direction??....;)

Fish_Eye 02-27-2002 07:29 AM

Bloo,

Nice job, mouse master.

BTW, you need to email me with your phone number.

Based on the flow of water, I would have to guess Niagara Falls.
My second guess would be Castle Hill near Raggedy Reef.

Beavertail for my final guess.

Mike

Bloo,

I'll go with Napatree
