Four Stroke winter
I hear winterizing a four stroke is easy, so whats the scoop, any tips? I may use it on a limited basis when we have nice winter days but, for the most part it will sit. I am told all I need to do is run some sta-bil thru the motor and thats it??

How big is the mill on your boat. I have an 18 horsepower Nissan on my skiff. Being 6'-6" and a real he-man ( hahahahaha) I just remove it from the boat and take her inside the nice warm basement. I even kept the shipping container and foam inserts. I clean her up, spray all the surfaces with WD-40 and put her in the box for a winters rest. In the spring I take her out, put her back on the boat and do the lower unit lube, new plugs and pull the prop and clean up all those fitting as and grease it all and she goes first pull every spring. If the motor isn't that heavy one or two guys can carry it in and you can build a stand in the basement with 2 by's and 3/4 plywood to hang her on. I have my Merc 5hp and old Woolner 25hp Johnson on stands as well down there.

I put mine away for the whole winter so it is more extensive. I guess if you are going to use it you just need to have stabil in it and the fluids changed on schedule. On my Honda 90 I run stabil in the tank. I have a small tank, 2 gal., and have stabil in that to run thru the carbs. so not to have to wait for the stabil to mix with 40 gal.'s in the big tank. I then drain the carbs. Pull the plugs and spray a little fogging oil in the cylinders and turn over to distribute. Put plugs back in. I do not fog the engine while it is running. Change oil and filter. Drain and replace the lower unit oil. I never leave the old lube in there all off season should be new. I take off the prop and lube shaft. Obvious cleaning and wd-40 on appropriate parts. Lube steering shaft and turn engine so shaft is it inside cylinder as far as possible. Always have engine trimed all the way down so any water will drain out and not freeze. I think that is it. In spring I bring it in to the pro and let them look it over. I have the water pump, thermostat replaced every 2 years no matter what. My tin boat 15hp 2 stroke goes down cellar on a stand and most of the previous is done to that too. Good luck. Paul
