Id say its some kinda offshore groundfish, big eyes etc. I know large like to cruise offshore, all kinda stuff for them to eat out there.

ditto...that lateral line,,,, :humpty:

Diggin Jiggin 10-31-2005 08:28 PM

When I first saw it I thought it looked like a small groundfish, the lateral line made me think cod but the color wasn't right.

Fish was on the south side of the cape.

That was my first thought. Couldn't see any gold fins though, and the lack of spots other than a few near the tail.

Brother Brian 10-31-2005 09:37 PM

My first guess was kingfish or croaker.

Juvie weak/squet.

Out here, they drive them right onto the beach. Seen a lot of them lying around on the rocks/sand aftert the bass drive them.

Looks like a white perch to me . . . I have a house on Perch Pond in Falmouth and I've seen schoolies mauling these things.

Clammer 11-01-2005 01:44 PM

not A perch ..

Gloucester2 11-01-2005 03:55 PM

Why ? Same deep body, yellow eye, prominent lateral line

scoobe 11-01-2005 07:22 PM

I've only seen them at the fish market... but I'd say croaker too.

striprman 11-01-2005 07:35 PM

The closer I look, more I'd say squet (not whiting) because the scales are very prominant. Did you look at the mouth ? Did it have 2 "fangs" or 2 sharp teeth on the upper jaw ?

Yep, I'm going with the weakfish on this one, too.

Easy things to look for in fish ID are overall body shape, mouth and eye placement, and, if you want to get technical, number of spines on their fins (this comes in handy when using a fish ID program like the one at www.fishbase.org). Colors aren't so telling once things have been partially digested, because certain substances/body parts get digested more quickly and color can be changed by stomach acids.
