Forage species
I know we had a "good reading" thread a few days ago, but does anyone have any recommendations on books on baitfish.... preferably describing the species in our area.
In an effort to better "match the hatch," I was hoping to grab a book that tells: 1. Species 2. When they are here 3. Importance as forage 4. Where they typically hang out (i.e. do they stay offshore, come up the rivers and estuaries, hang near structure, etc.) I want to see what the bass are eating before I go out and buy a bunch lures that look good to me. Thanks. |
Schoolie,
Alan Caolo's book A Fisherman's Guide to Atlantic Baitfish and other food sources is a good catalog of different prey items. You just might find a good number of those critters in upcoming posts right here at Striped-Bass.com and a new offering that's in the works...to be announced. Mike |
Very cool.
The post was kinda half intended as a suggestion for possible ideas for the site. I was recently looking at some South Carolina guide sites at the request of my dad. One had a page that listed all the targeted gamefish in that area and I thought that would be idea for the site... and then when looking for baitfish book, I thought that may be some good informational content that John could maybe throw together too. You know, for people new to fishing or maybe someone traveling to the area who want to fish, that would be some good information that might draw people to the site. Or for more experienced anglers who may want to indentify what the fish are feeding on... just thinking out loud. Anyway, I'll check out the book... Thanks. |
