Roman Nikes, How

are they weighted? I'm going on a swimmer without lip binge. Help...

capesams 11-07-2005 05:34 PM

x-ray :eyes:

Tagger 11-07-2005 06:01 PM

Jake/ Fred I been thinking of them alot myself .. want to try one too ... I'd say Vinyard Blues has to be the leading authority on those .. His collection is sick .. maybe he'll chime in .. I noticed making darters difference in weight of blanks,,angles on top,and wire locations are huge.. I bet its the same deal with those ..

YOU, are the reasom that I'm doing this. That yellow Dahtah you gave me has the sickest search and destroy that I've ever seen! It looks like it's tracking down fish, makes about a 6 foot wide "S".

I have one that bassassasin made a couple years back. Nice action to it :kewl: Hopefully he'll chime in and give you some input.

Here you go, top one is an original, bottom one is mine with eyes :eyes:
This is the largest Nike that Floyd Roman made, it's about 3.5 ounces. Haven't swam mine yet but hopefully this weekend. I tried to imitate the color that vineyardblues had at the MSBA show. Hi Peter :wavey:
If it swims alright, I might make it for the lazy swap :tooth:

Backbeach Jake 11-07-2005 08:09 PM

Love that color! How'd you weight it?

tobias 11-07-2005 08:11 PM

All in the pooper :bshake: Can't find any belly weight in the original.

Backbeach Jake 11-07-2005 08:14 PM

Pissa! Thanks! :bounce:

Tagger 11-07-2005 08:36 PM

is original weighted in the pooper ? How do you classify that plug ? swimmer? darter ? sweet work ,,I'd love one ..

tobias 11-07-2005 09:00 PM

Pretty sure it's weighted in the pooper, it's tail heavy. I'm guessing it swims like a bottle plug. Both original and clone are going swimming :hihi:
Don't worry Tagger, you'll get one

ProfessorM 11-08-2005 10:06 AM

Those are nice. I have never heard of them before. Ignorance is bliss. P.

vineyardblues 11-08-2005 10:16 AM

FLOYD ROMAN lures were made with screw eyes and wire tru
If your having issues with the wire :)
90% of mine are screw eyes :faga:
I would guess the screw eyes are early,,, late 30's early 40's

Whoops posted wrong one .. I sneezed in the epoxy on that one ,,,,just mixed it in ..Roman Nike ,,No weight sounds good,, lively ,,like musso darter.. What kind of wood.. hard maple , or a cedar , white pine ? what are they made of ..

Backbeach Jake 11-08-2005 05:08 PM

While working today and thinking about those plugs, it occured to me that I hadn't asked what kind of wood. It would(wood?) make a difference. Thanks Tagger. Any pic of your work could never mess up a thread. Never.

Tagger 11-08-2005 08:35 PM

not to beat a dead horse,, anyone know what kinda wood... thanks.. fred ..your on plugs for life list. little black danny is magic .. thanks for letting nephew ho u ..

tobias 11-08-2005 09:35 PM

I think it might be red cedar. Where there is paint missing on my original, the wood is very soft. The lure looks like it has about 10 coats of paint, pretty thick.

I did the "balance the lure in the middle" and the tail wanted to fall first and if the lure is made of red cedar, it wouldn't weigh 3.5 ounces without some weight. Just my observation.

capesams 11-08-2005 10:24 PM

these two seem to be red cedar..blue one is 3/4 at the tail while the yellow is 5/8.......blue is 7 1/2 long while the yellow is 7 1/4, both are 1 5/8 thick.
both are through wired, but the belly has screw eyes..I can also see abit of lead in the tail..3/16 thick by ??long..nothing in the tummy.

weight on these are 2.55/ 3.0 0z.

Tagger 11-09-2005 04:43 AM

thanks.. u swim one CS ? great looking plug

capesams 11-09-2005 06:50 AM

no I havn't, these are so dry they'd likely to blow up...when I looked at the belly screws,,they were drilled out like they were going to put swivels in,they have gromets..and if you look in the hole you can see what looks like glue that the screws are set into.if they weren't so hard to come by I'd split one in half :hidin:

vineyardblues 11-09-2005 08:11 AM

If you split one in 1/2 call me up I would like to watch and have a drink and say a prayer :eek5:

Make sure it's the bottom one , the top one is a tuff color

Weird, but I've been experimenting with a body shape not alot different than those in Capesams' picture... just a lot smaller... like maybe 4 inches by 3/4" at the thickest point.

Major difference, and point of frustration, is I have been cutting darter faces on them... in all kinds of angles and most common woods, without success. Won't dart for nothing, but they swim pretty good. Guess I should just cut slopes on them and paraphrasing what 10x10 used to say... invent the Floyd Roman. :rotfl:

capesams 11-09-2005 12:35 PM

I saw one Ed p had a few years back..brand new...I could sware it was much bigger than these two.....cut these,,no...if I get the chance I'll get it x-rayed along with a few other's.

eastendlu 11-09-2005 12:53 PM

I seem to remember someone here (not metioning any names) had access to an x-ray machine.Would be nice to post them for us to see>:)

tobias 11-09-2005 01:09 PM

Mine weighs 3.5 ounces. I'll get measurements when I get home.
