Air brush vs Rattle Can
I have yet to use an air brush. Have been building plugs now for just a few months. I have been doing all my painting with rattle cans. They seem to work ok but are pretty inconsistent as far as the paint coming out evenly. I'm thinking of picking up a combo kit at air brush city but wanted to get your opininion so I'll put the question out their.
What would you prefer The air brush or the rattle can? |
I am curious too. I am using spray bombs. I find the worst part is the cold weather. I won't spray in house so if it is nice like last weekend I go crazy. Guess as it gets colder I will paint at work at night in unheated warehouse and quickly bring into shop to dry before I go home. Would like to try an airbrush someday though then I could use in the cellar. P.

I like the airbrush...you can do a lot more with it. Get more creative.
Check tomorrows Salem News and see if they have a Coupon for AC Moore. You can save 40% off one item. You can get an airbrush there |
yup airbrush. Wait for the 50% off coupon then you end up making out a lil better.
As a fellow machinist all i can say is "come to the dark side" you will never look back.
Air brush, more selection of color and safer water based paints.
I'm not a Plug Builder but knows alot lot about airbrush. The one thing you have to look into is (Double Action or Single Action Airbrush) Don't buy the cheap crap cause' you get what you pay for them. I'm a big Iwata and Badger Fan. Feel free to PM me any Airbrush questions and will be more than happy to answer.
Bought an airbrush, Badger 150, double action at A C Moore 50% off weekly coupon. Even though I'm new at this it made a big differance. Quick learning curve.
Go with a double action . I've got a Badger 'Anthem' myself .
PB -- airbrush - double action. All are right on target with AC Moore. You will want to set up a spray booth for spraying in the winter. lots of dry spray settles on everything! By the way - what lathe are you using?
Offer still stands on thru drilling. PM me w/number :call: and we can get together soon. Look for a warm day as my cave is a shed and It is a pain to get the heat going :jump: |
i use both.. do base colors alot with a rattle can and then after paints totally dry (24hrs.) dress up with an air brush .flamable toxic fumes from rattle cans is a definate no no in the house ..
can'sall the way and when their empty, I get to shoot them full of hole's at the sand pit.Love to watch them junp around on the ground.Kinda reminds me of fish jumping outta the water with a plug in their mouth.
Bought a cheapo airbrush. Have not used it yet, but would like to experiment and have not even taken it out of the package. Bought Enamel paints to go with it and air brush thinner. If I want water based paint for an air brush, does Michael's sell it?? I remember someone talking about Createx?? Maybe I'm wrong....????
Not worth it to me to go out and spend $200 + on a compressor/airbrush. Not for the few plugs I make anyways. |
Buy the createx water-based paint....more selection of color and easier to change colors/clean up!
Where do I get it?
AC Moore or Michaels Crafts....its about 3 bucks a bottle. :alien:
 Charrette also sells createx paints and has other waterbased brands. they also sell the auto colors, including metalics. Charrette has the big size bottles also. Michaels also has some createx paints.
You can blend colors using the waterbased acrylics by overspraying wet paint with another color. :bl: |
Sounds like another addiction coming on.

I've already started and made a few......also made lots of mistakes. Thought I had my process down....until yesterday. Turned 4 nice shapes and screwed up the thru hole drilling. Skipped using the jig I made and it cost me....
Cannot take shortcuts that's for sure. Here are a couple of my firsts. |
Kind of plain and boring but I was trying to get the process down to see what to expect and try to learn as I go....and I learned a lot I tell ya.
I'm still liking the cans too
