Verizon DSL

I found out that they're offering it for $15/month now. I'm paying $21/month now for msn dialup. so why not make the switch i figure. It says i can still use msn software, so i can probably keep my email addy.
With the DSL i wont tie up the phone anymore (which isn't really a problem now because i have call waiting)
The one catch is to get that rate, i need to sign up for a year. Everyone i work with seemed to have cox? Are they any better? We have Cox phone and cable so I might save someting by going to them. After looking, i couldn't find anything about cox dsl....just high speed internet (same thing  )

for $30/month i can get speeds up to 3.0M, but i think that 768K at $15/month is good enough with me. With the dialup i connect at 50K

Before i sign up is there anyone else here that has VERIZON dsl that can comment about them?

BigBo 11-19-2005 12:17 PM

I've been using the Verizon DSL for $29.95/month for over a year now and have been very happy with the service as well as any tech support I've needed. Which has been very little up to this point.
Better check to see if it's available in your area and you need to be a Verizon phone customer as well in order to get those advertised rates.

I've had it for close to two years. No complaints. Will never do dial-up again.Jump on the offer while its still available.Read the fine print though as there are federal fees etc. also involved.

Verizon vs Optimum Online

How does verizon DSL compare to Optimum on line? Thanks

lurch 11-21-2005 08:05 AM

Jump all over the deal because if you are used to 50K dial up then 768 dsl will be smoking!!

If you can get it then sign up for DSL as cable is just WAY too expensive. I currently pay 49.99/month which I believe is too high.

Verizon is currently in a HUGE project to get fiber to homes and when they do that the there will be some nice competition and lower prices for consumers.

THanks Guys,
just called verizon and asked them what speed I was running and they changed my cost from 29.99 down to 15.99 ... She was very nice and it only took 2 min to save cash every month!

Young Salt 11-21-2005 04:26 PM

or verizon.net/greatoffer52

the flier says if you use the website you get the 1st month free

fishaholic18 11-21-2005 05:35 PM

Thanks, ordered it today. I had to switch my phone service over to them too. It's actually gonna cost me less $ due to the decrease in my phone bill.

Young Salt 11-21-2005 06:29 PM

i wanted to sign up, but i can't get it with this phone line.....slooooooooww and steady for now still :(

Squid kids Dad 11-21-2005 07:28 PM

There's a BIG difference in speen SQD.The $29.95 plan allows for 3mbps download and 768kbps upload. The $14.95 plan allows for 768/128.The second plan is way faster than a dial-up connection but much slower than what you already have.

Squid kids Dad 11-21-2005 09:25 PM

Basswipe ...Thanks for the info

vineyardblues 11-23-2005 12:00 PM

YES. I was paying 29.99 for dsl
they now offer it for 15.99 same speed as I had ,,,,fast anuff for me!
for 29.99 I guess you get God speed ...lol
so now I only pay 15.99 , early x-mass gift from Verizon :)

VB when you originally signed up for DSL they must've only offered it in the 768/128 speed you have now.

When I signed up for $29.95 the speed was 1.5/384.Since they now offer 3.0/768 speed for $29.95 I called today and upgraded to the higher speed without increasing my bill. They also offered the slower package for $14.95 if I so desired it.That ain't bad service.

So in the end depending on when you signed up you increase your speed without increasing your bill or slow it up a little and save a few bucks.

macojoe 11-29-2005 12:51 PM

I wish I could get it!!

I use Comcast and I left Comcast for Derict TV so now my bill for High Speed is a wopping $60!!!!!!!!!!!!

But Version said I could get it, then they came out and said I am to far away from them and I can't get it.

And I will never go Dial up!! So I am screwed!!

A friend just got the $15 deal from thenm and it seems to be just fine!! For the $29 I hear that they give you a faster speed.

JohnR 11-29-2005 02:13 PM

I started this site on sDSL 384 up/down for only $150 per month on a server running under my kitchen table, but I was single and relatively rich :tooth:

vineyardblues 11-29-2005 02:28 PM

Quick funny story,
I have had DSL for years and years. I was paying the 29.99 thing and called them for the 15 dollar special at the same speed I was at. They said no problem and I should see it on my next bill... Done Deal and a nice surprise!

So I start telling people GET DSL CHEAP......
I get a call from a friend last night ,he says that he called Verizon and they said he was to far from CO or what ever it's called / so was his girl friends house. Both in my town. He calls me up and starts blasting me cuz I am a dope. They told him to keep checking on line (type in your number)

So I get on line and test his number and his girls/ zippo / not aval
So just for shuts and grins I put my number in //// zippo / not avail
What a joke! I have had DSL for well over 5 years. SO is this all just a hype with Verizon ? Fill their quota ?
I bet my next bill will still be at 29.99 ...lol

Same thing comes up when I type in my #, but they said it's avail. ,in fact they're switching me to it next week.

TheSpecialist 11-30-2005 09:52 AM

It's not hype, the distance is legite to a point. The test they run probably uses engineering record that show side leads on cable pairs which adds extra capacitence to the line. When DSL first came out I lived in Quincy, and I was about a mile or a little more from the CO (Central Office where the dial tone orgiginates). They tested my line and told me that I was 1200 feet too far according to the engineer. When I went ot work the next day I tested the line, and came up about 160' tooo far. So I called them back, and got the engineers name and number ( they only gave me that info cause I work for them) and called the engineer. I told him my tes came a lot closer to the working length, and I wanted him to give the go ahead, and he reluctantly did, telling me they could not guarantee speed. I told him that was fine, it still had to be faster than my dial up. Another interesting thing, some phone lines work on units called Litespans, or other units called Slc's. These are basically systems that use fiber optic cable or T1's between the CO and a Shack out in the neighborhood. From the shack in the neighborhood the lines are fed through electronic cards, depending on the system each cards splits off 2 or 4 dialtones from the T1's or fiber and switches them over to copper cable. Now the company does have the technologie to offer it on these systems, however they don't in every location yet as the cards are exspensive ( they had to engineer a special card just for DSL) and are still not readily available. I would call them and ask them if you are on a Litespan, or a SlC (pronounced slick), and if you are if there is anyway that they could put you on a copper pair, and if the copper pair would not be too long for DSL, sometimes they have about 100 pairs of copper out there for people wanting the DSL. One other thing if they tell you that you are on copper ask them if the copper pair can be conditioned, like having side leads removed to lose some of the extra capacitence. Good Luck and please don't mention my name as this is all proprietary info, tell them a "Friend" works for them...

reelecstasy 11-30-2005 10:02 AM

Does it matter if it is a SLC 96 or a SLC series 5, I'll provision your litespan for ya ?
I tried to go the verizon rt, same deal. Did my own stress test, did not see any bridge tap, they gave me a service date 3 weeks away. Checking further into it, I noticed there were no spare slots available. So come the due date, they would have said sorry, no can do..Verizon's customer service is lacking, to say the least.
Instead I opted for Comcast, it is fast. Not as fast as here at work (10+mbs) but it is quick...

Specialist sounds like proprietary info to me, :rotf2:

TheSpecialist 11-30-2005 10:12 AM

I know the cards are out there for Litespan, but not sure about the SLC. They have a new thing called D slam, I have seen it at a location with SLC, and I am not sure how it works but it gives you DSL and a guy in my garage has it and likes it.
