Loose reel seat solutions
 

On the two rods i use the most i have only one complaint......the reel seat always comes loose. I can snug it up, but before long it gets sloppy again. I can do it by just wiggling it in my hand. One rod is a tica, the other is an ugly stick. Both are fuji seats.

I know i could......

1. put duct tape around it - that would get messy after awhile.
2. Use a rubber band - i figure it would dryrot on me.
3. did a search, one thread said i could shoot epoxy into the reel seat, but that seems a bit too drastic....what do you do when you need to maintain the reel?

Thread sealer tape that is used for copper and pvc threads. It should work but I don't know for sure.

Not sure exactly what you mean here.

Is the whole seat itself loose, ie, does the seat turn on the blank even when there's no reel attached? If so, try some epoxy poured between the seat and the blank. If that doesn't help, you're going to have to have the rod stripped, the seat re-attached and the guides re-wrapped.

Is the reel still loose even when the locking ring is tightened all the way down? If so, the hoods on the seat are too big for the reel foot. Try a different reel.

Is the reel loosening up after a few casts? If so, your hand is probably loosening the locking ring as you cast and fish. You can try taping the ring to prevent your hand from loosening it. And next time, have a custom rod built with the locking ring at the tip end of the reel seat ;)

I just realized it is the reel seat and not the threads.

I would ask Mike at M&D's.

to clarify, the seat itself on the blank is fine.......it's the reel that is comming loose after a couple casts.

mike, i think it could be a combo of both #2 and #3 will have to pay more attention next time i cast them.

Teflon tape is very slippery. I've solved this problem by brushing a thin coat of clear nail polish on a section of the threads. Let it dry before using. I used two coats and it did the trick.

Against the "norm" if you have a custom built put the reel seat on so the fixed hood is to the rear. I did it once, got strange looks form some people and haven't had the reel come loose once....
