A winter storm is expected to impact Southeastern New England late tonight into Tuesday

Low pressure is expected to reach the coast of the Carolinas this evening, then strengthen as it passes southeast of Nantucket Tuesday. This winter storm has the potential to bring heavy snow and strong winds to Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts, including the Providence to Boston corridor.

Keep in mind there is still some uncertainty in the forecast track of this storm. It is still possible that it will track closer to Southern New England, which would bring heavy snowfall farther inland and impact more of the region. There is a lower chance that the storm will track farther offshore, resulting in less snowfall than currently expected.

Winter storm warning in effect from midnight tonight to 4 PM EST Tuesday

The National Weather Service in Taunton has issued a winter storm warning, which is in effect from midnight tonight to 4 PM EST Tuesday. The winter storm watch is no longer in effect.

This warning includes the south coasts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including Cape Cod, Nantucket Marthas Vineyard and block Island.

Snow is expected to reach Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts tonight, probably around midnight. This snow should become heavy before daybreak and continue through Tuesday morning. The snow is expected to end Tuesday afternoon. Total snowfall of 4 to 10 inches is possible in the warning area, with the 10 inch amounts more likely toward Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Marthas Vineyard.

A winter storm warning is issued when an average of 6 or more inches of snow is expected in a 12 hour period or for 8 or more inches in a 24 hour period. Travel will be slow at best on well treated surfaces, and quite difficult on any unplowed or untreated surfaces.

A winter storm watch remains in effect from late tonight through Tuesday afternoon.

Snow is expected to reach Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts tonight, probably around midnight. This snow May become heavy before daybreak, and should continue through Tuesday morning before ending Tuesday afternoon.

Snow is expected to reach Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts late Monday night, probably around midnight. The snow May become heavy before daybreak and continue through Tuesday morning, before ending Tuesday afternoon. Total snowfall of 4 to 8 inches is possible in the watch area, with the 8 inch amounts more likely from Providence to Taunton and Plymouth.

A winter storm watch is issued for the potential of accumulating snow of 6 or more inches in a 12 hour period or 8 or more inches in a 24 hour period. Anyone traveling in the next 24 hours should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to modify travel plans should winter weather develop.

News was just predicting 2-4 in Providence, 4-7 Newport to Plymouth....

What do yo mean NO SCHOOL !! What happened to walking uphill both ways in 3 ft of snow " when I was a kid?" If my 15 year old is home all day he'll eat me out of house and home . The wife is already with the extra milk and bread Shaws in Wareham was packed on my way to work this AM. Do the weather guys get extra pay for the panic factor?

Another coastal storm May affect Southern New England on Friday

Latest forecasts indicate an intensifying coastal storm will track northeast from the North Carolina coast on Friday, passing about 200 miles south of Nantucket. This scenario would bring accumulating snow to Southern New England on Friday, especially near the coast.

The track of this storm is still uncertain and there is a chance it could pass further out to sea with little impact on Southern New England.

People in Southern New England should continue to monitor the latest forecasts and statements. Stay tuned to NOAA all hazards radio or your favorite media outlet for the latest information.

of course i do remember jumping out of my second floor window
into a snow drift that reached up to the second floor window sill
and finding myself in a snowy tomb choking on snow.
