suggestions for 10ft. rod
 

can anyone suggest a 10 ft rod for throwing bigger plugs(2-3.5oz) and eels? i know a lot guys like the GSB 120 1M. i throw a lot of pencils , would this rod be too stiff for this application? any feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks...

GSB 1M, XRA 1205, Lami SB 121 3M in glass---they'll all work. Pick your price range, and you can't go wrong.

I would suggest the Batson SU 1208, but if you throw a lot of pencils, you won't like it.

Another blank that'll work, if you can find one, is the All Star GSW 1206/2.

I love the 1201M, I think it's SOFT for pencils, the 1208 or 1209 might be a better choice...
That being said I love the 1201M.. if you find yourself down my way let me know I'll break it out and you can fire off a test cast or two...

The 1201M is a great rod and has worked fine for me with 2 oz. pencils and spooks. I might prefer something a little lighter for pencils that size but it's well worth the small sacrifice when you get into a decent fish. You can wear a bass out pretty quickly with that stick.

You could probably get a 1201L and 1201M custom with a basic wrap @ M&D's for not that much more than you would pay 1 Arra most places.

I use a 1201L in spinning for throwing everything from
1-3/4 oz. up to 3 oz plugs and eels. I like its parabolic type qualities that aid in loading to working plugs. Great rod .

I like the Lami's that I also have the 1201M as a blank to be wrapped either conventional (questionable) or spinning for the bigger girls and rough water but I can't comment on experience.

good advice already given on the blanks mentioned. if you are after a 10' blank/rod and you throw mostly surface plugs, especially pencils, the sb1213m(glass) or gsb1201m(graph) are great choices. the 1205 is slightly faster action and not the best all around pencil rod. many love the gsb1321m (11', 1' longer than 1201m on same graph material) for pencils and the xra1322 would be a choice as well. it's also a matter of how much do you want to spend? you dont want a faster action rod for pencils, which the 1208/1209 would be.

I would go a foot longer for the XRA 1322. It will handle the weights and do good on the low end and high end specified and be able to work pencils. There are a lot of rods that will do the weight range but most are very fast action and not good for working the pencils.

In fact , now that i think of it , the GSB 120 1L would be fine and less money . I disagree with anyone who says it won't handle 3.5 OZ.

i was also considering this blank as well. they do seem nice for pencils but i'm not sure if i really want an 11 ft.'er. the guys who fish M like this rod, right?

I have the 1201L, 1201M, and All Star 1206/2 and the 1201L is the best one for pencils even in the weight range you mentioned. I agree with Saltheart about the 1201L handling 3.5 oz without a problem. It is my favorite eel rod too.

I am looking for a 10 Ft rod for the same reasons as Bart and occasionally use it with 6 to 8 oz weights in heavy water. What would the benefits be going to a xra1205 ?

The 1205 will not handle 6 or 8 IMO.

For 6-8, you have to look at blanks like the Batson SU 1209, the Lami SB 121 5M or the Lami GSB 122 1MH. I wouldn't even try casting 8 on the GSB 120 1M, let alone an Arra 1205.

Anyone mind giving me a comparison of the arra 1205 to the su 1208 and gsb 1201m. I am pretty familiar with the last 2, but don't know enough about the 1205 to know if it is worth the extra dough for what I want. Looking for same weight range, but not concerned about working a pencil or tossing an eel as much as stopping a bigun in the current. Need to toss 1.5 oz bucktails at times and bigger plugs. Thanks

The Arra 1205 will definitely handle more than the SU1208 . The Arra has a faster action than the 120 1m but maybe not any added weight capability. For the same weight , the arra will cast further than either.

Which one? The Arra 1205? If M+D doesn't have it in stock , he can probably get it for you.

The Lami Tri-flex blank CSB1201M also fits the bill.

1205 is what I'm going with
