Squid-plug?

I have a trip planned for next spring. The primary forage at this spot is squid. Darters have been a go to plug the past few trips for the guys I'll be joining. When bass are keyed in on squid, what plugs do you throw?

Pete_G 12-17-2005 07:41 AM

I've done ok with a pink/silver 17A Bomber.

Darters are an old standby. Last year, off Chatham with plenty of squid nearby, Habs new squid plugs did very well and they cast a mile+

I hooked some decent fish on an Afterhours squid.

Tsunami rubber squid with or without an egg sinker, set up like a sluggo.

t.orlando 12-17-2005 10:33 AM

Dont forget the bucktail, for top Gags Squidzee, Surface Tension(long casters)

tattoobob 12-17-2005 10:40 AM

IMO / A W, p, or y, bucktail or good plastic will outfish all other artificals [MOST] of the time ......

Rappin Mikey 12-17-2005 09:23 PM

The squidzee casts a mile and will hug the bottom where the bigguns dwell. I heard you like to hug hairy bottoms.

Nebe 12-17-2005 09:31 PM

Copper habs needle or a rubber squidhound.

tlapinski 12-18-2005 08:00 AM

Hab's squid plug? Which one? I've seen his squid pencil popper, squid straight popper, and squid junior swimmer.

pbadad 12-18-2005 10:23 AM

T Lap. During our trip last spring the white SS darter , SS needle in amber seemed to be the ticket. Various colors also worked. Long casts were the key to more hits. Squidzees and loaded SS needles will be in my bag this time around!

Clogston29 12-18-2005 01:01 PM

If they're on top and the squid are on the large side, one of Mac's versions of the Norris Jet Squid could be a good choice. If they're not on top, maybe a Hab's night and gale would do the trick in white or pink?

Jay Dog 12-18-2005 09:15 PM

Toby last spring SS needles and darters in amber or darters in white with a pink stripe did real well out at that place

Back Beach 12-19-2005 08:45 AM

SS stubby needle in white or amber w/feathers.

Paul, I must have 20 - 30 of them. I threw them a lot for a while, but have yet to even raise a fish on one. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Tried many different retrieves.

capesams 12-19-2005 08:45 PM

they work great on the back side of mo-mo-m err can't say,,but the pop-up,let rest,pop-up, rest kill's them.they alway's hit when dead floating after the pop.

Notaro 12-20-2005 01:39 AM

White AH spookster does the trick for me.

piemma 12-20-2005 06:07 AM

Toby:
Back in the late 80s and early 90s they were the killer lure on the Backside. Don't know why. Like Capesam said. Let it rest and pop a couple of times. Always hit them when they were resting.

tlapinski 12-20-2005 06:18 AM

CS & Piemma, Thanks! I knew a couple of you guys would have some insight on the plug. That's probably one of the only retrieves I never tried.

RIROCKHOUND 12-20-2005 08:20 AM

I have a home-made cranberry reverse I'll have to dig out this spring..

Toby; had good luck with Howdy's in spring spots when the squid were around... just bump Bernzy's hook up a size or two on the belly... :smash: I learned the hard way.....

White 2 oz Gibbs pencil popper with 3-4 inch saddle hackle tail white with pink. Although I want to get my hands on on of those copper colored needles
