Winter reading???
 

So what are you reading this winter?
I'm getting OTW's new anthology, just hoping that it is'nt just the last two or three years revisited.
Might get a book by Frank D :faga: or Night Fishing.
What I'd love to see is an anthology of Long Island fisherman stuff.

Hate to say it but the OTW book is just that a re-printing of articles from the last few years. I suppose its a good way to have them all in one package?

Jim Whites soft plastics book is exelent and "Night tides" is another great read of course striper wars is also good. The rest to me are all the same especially from frank, while good its just more of the same "me and you joe romance on the starlit beach" stuff........

Good book....... its more than the last few years.... some articles are older...wife got the hard cover for me....love it!

I just got annother 2 Frank D books, the last two I havent read. To anyone looking for some good winter reading i highly recomend Trophy Striper and Eastern Tides by Frank D, Striper Surf should be required reading for all striper fishers.:read:

Billy is absol the best striper fishermen I ever had the pleasure of fishing with. Seems like yesterday,but it was over 22 yrs ago when I first met & fished with him. If you ever get a chance to catch one of his seminars, do it. He is quite an impressive fellow & if anyone has a shot at the next world record ,hes definitely near the top of the list. The guy is as hardcore as it gets.

Just got CONSIDER THE EEL for $.99 and STRIPERS AND BLUES FOR $9 at amazon, still a lot of copies of eel for around $1.

I agree after reading the book he will probably be the man. I love the story of the 4 fish over 50 lbs., 2 were 58 lbs, off a bridge in the middle of the nite in Nov. Hardcore is an understatement.

Working on my JNCIP certification (which is the same as a Cisco CCIE cert) so my nose will be in the router manuals....so no fishing books for me :(

Reading the Water by Bob Post. I've read every striper book there is and this is the best. IMO

Two great books I just finished...neither is about fishing.

"The New American Militarisim : How Americans Are Seduced by War" - Andrew Bacevich

A West Point grad, BU historian and Vietnam Vet studies how the US perception of war has dramatically changed (often for the worse) since the Vietnam War. Extremely well documented and brutally honest, this book places the Bush doctrine and current events into naked context. Not a partisan book, everyone should read this.

"One Bullet Away : The Making of a Marine Officer" - Nathaniel Fick

Amazing first person account of what it takes to become a Recon Marine and what combat in Afghanistan and Iraq was really like. To be honest, every Marine I've ever known was a bit wacky and now I understand why :bl: Next time I'm freezing my ass off on a rock, I'll just think of how easy life really is.

I'm going to make my stepson read this for sure.

Blizzard of 78. Greatest storm I ever went through. Northern RI had 54" of snow with 14 foot drifts. The wind blew for 6 or 7 hours straight at 70+ MPH. Truly an awe inspiring storm.

Aside from a few tech books (SQL/Apple/Unix)

Im currently reading Memoirs of a Geisha... its not that bad.

I will probably also end up reading the entire LOTR trilogy for the umpteenth time

That is, untill Striper Wars comes in the mail... :)

I just finished "The Terrible Hours" by Peter Maas. It is about the recovery of a sunken sub just before WW2. More importantly it is about a man named Swede Monson. He devised just about all of the underwater recovery systems and was the guy who made the formulas for breathing at great depths and avoiding the bends. A little textbooky, But, you won't be able to put it down during the first half.,

Santa gave me Chapmans safe boating guide book I'm reading now. After that, "On the Run" by Dibenidetto.

For the most part, I'll be reading alot of books, articles, reports, etc. on gillnetting, trawling, scallop fishing, and fish, marine mammal, seabird, and turtle ID...for my new job! Yay!

As for suggestions, if you want to give yourself a striper break, I'd go with The Hungry Ocean by Linda Greenlaw. Not to say I perfectly agree with her viewpoints, but it is a great story about longlining for swordfish.

I'm in the middle of "Why do men have nipples?" -- my sister got it for me for Christmas. It's pretty cool -- it answers all sorts of unanswerables -- why do we yawn when others yawn? are farts really flammable? Funny stuff.

Longshot; thats a good read.
Currently reading: The Bounty (the 2003 book). Very good read on the in depth workings of the crew pre and post mutiny

Besides my usual reading load of a weekly geophyisics journal, and a few articles each month from various other journals, plus reading that focuses on my research, I dont do a ton of 'fun reading'. I read fairly fast though so I try to do 1 book a month. Not sure what next months will be.

As far as Greenlaw's book, I wouldnt buy anything other than Hungry Ocena, the rest were crap IMHO. She should have quit while she was ahead.

Just started 10 Hours til Dawn, so far its very good.

One of the best books I ever read is The Devil in the White City by Eric Larson. First U.S. serial killer during the Chicago World Fair in the 1890s. Can't put it down.

Into the Heart of the Sea a good one.

Just started "A walk in the woods" last night. I'm about halfway through it.Two out of shape middle aged guys with no hiking experience decide to hike the 2100 mile appalachian trail. So far it is priceless..

me: i have technical manuals to read...and art books. Today believe it or not i just got my first digital camera....
(a Gift from my really great brother, Gary) oh boy- oh BOY !
it's a Canon Power Shot A410 with a zoom lense.

So i'll be reading all about how to use it...that and my guide to photoshop and illustrater "wow" book. Now, when i go fishing (or anywhere) i'll be able to have pictures without having to develope them.....This is going to be a blast for me....for years to come...

I read that book Back Beach. It was great. Hiking the Appalachain Trail is a one day secret dream of mine. Straight through from Springer Mountain, GA to Mt. Katadin, ME. Maybe when I retire. It would be the ultimate personal challenge for a fat guy like me.

I listened to these on cd while on a long distance drive for the holidays. They were well worth it.

I shocked to find I had a personal connection in the cod one. The cod scientist I used to work for years ago was quoted in it.

The Bryson one was funny. I almost drove off the road laughing about his sidekick's exploits in Waynesboro, VA.

walk in the woods is great.. i love the part where the guys buddy has a mental breakdown and chucks his 12 pack of bud into the woods :hihi:

i hiked the width of mass on the appalation.. there is no way in hell i would dod the whole thing... no way jose :hs:

read ON THE RUN awesome book , I couldnt put it down, ended up finishing it in one night!

That book wouldn't be any better if it played music when you opened it...:kewl:
