PENN 704--GREEN

First Post :) Great site! The only one with that "sittin' around the country store shootin' the bull " feeling. Hope you don,t change or improve that...............Now for my question--I'm trying to get a Penn 704 (old green)--I'd like to get some feedback on whether it's just an old sentimental thing or if it's up to the job (surf)? Thanks for any replies!

The old 704 is built like a tank. There is not much that can go wrong with the reel other than bail springs.
sence the reel was discontinued some 25 years ago and replaced by the 704Z they are in short supply. Most of the parts are interchangable. you might be able to find some on ebay.

Good luck on your search if it's the reel you want.

My self I would choose a reel with more bearings and a oversized lineroller and a "SILENT "Infinite Anti-Reverse.
The old clicking of the 704 series drove me crazzy :smash:
The oversized roller will stop as mush as 30% of your line twist
Infinite Anti-Reverse no wobble or backlash in the rotor.

I have a brand new 701 in the box and when my addition is done it's going up on the beams with the other collectiables.
the way is't going it could be a while :o

They are absolutely up to the task, like Mike said they are built like a tank and the parts are cheap and easy to replace. I have a few that were handed down to me by my grandfather and father that I still use regularly in the surf.

Green 704Z

Agree with mikecc, the green 704Z is built like a tank. Some of them are worth more than others depends on the side plates and markings. As for parts, my partner Charlie is a collector of green 704 reels and parts. We have a pretty good inventory at the shop. http://www.weekapaug.com. If we don't have it we can get it(most of the time).

I have a green Penn 700 Spinfisher that my uncle gave me a few years ago. The bail spring broke last year, but was easily replaced (not by me). The reel is kind of a clunker, but seems to work o.k. Am I better off holding onto this as "collector item" , sell it, or keep using?

If anyone has any 705's and wants to get rid of them for a price, let me know. :D

That goes for 703's and 711's too.

tattoo-
to my knowledge, penn never made a 703  you are thinking of the 702 if you meant the lefty version of the 700. what about a 707? not that i have one, but you listed the other "wrong-way" reels. :D

Just because Klinton was a lefty don't hold it against the rest of us. :D

greenies 704

i have 15 of them and they are the best reel i ever used.. in the surf and on the beaches they hold up. if you get sand in them you just take the spool off and put it in the surf.. i also use the 650 ss they're a good reel too
