Best Version of Fav. Songs:

Since we've been talking a lot about music lately, let's hear your favorite versions of particular songs. For instance, there are many version sof "Symphathy for the Devil" out there but my all time favorite version of the trackis from Circus. Two others I think are the best:

U2's version of "Bad" from Live Aid
Crowes "My Morning Song" @ Hammerstein on Easter Sunday 05' (19 minutes, I can send if anybody interested).

So, what you got?

Stormy Monday - Allman Bros.

The Dad Fisherman 01-05-2006 11:10 AM

Simple Kind of Man - Shinedown......Used that one for a Scout Graduation Presentation...I think it blows Skynard's version away. also think it speaks right to what we're trying to instill in the kids.

Whiskey in a Jar - Metallica

Crazy Train - Pat Boone....nuff said on that one :hee:

and anything by Richard Cheese :hihi:

There's dozens more...I'm just having a mental block right now

i love the deads' cover of dylans' the mighty quinn. saw it live as an encore back in '86- brought the place down!

MoroneSaxatilis 01-06-2006 11:15 AM

I'd have to agree with the Allman Bros version of "Stormy Monday".
Stevie Ray's "Voodoo Chile" comes to mind as well.
James Taylor's versions of just about any other songwriters material, including, but not exclusive to, Carol King's "You've Got a Friend" and Buddy Holly's "Everyday".
Beatles' version of "Twist And Shout".
Hendrix version of "Watchtower".
The list goes on and on, to be sure.
Sometimes, though, there's just no way to improve on the original: "Turn The Page".

Hahaha. That is a great cover. The original is good too of course, but that is a great cover. I used to sing that one at parties. People loved it.

"...started talkin' sh!t, wouldn't ya know, I reached back like a pimp and I slapped the... "

Anyone can remake a song,
But it takes a real gifted talent to write a song , perform it, and make it a hit!!!

Nebe 01-06-2006 08:15 PM

not one song, but a whole album.. Dub Side of the Moon by the Easy All Stars.. tribute to Floyd's Dark side of the moon...

great disk.

Also, Les Claypool's flying Frog Brigades tribute to Floyds 'Animals' is better than the original IMO..

Backbeach Jake 01-06-2006 08:20 PM

Even Dylan thought that Hendrix nailed "Watchtower".

ProfessorM 01-06-2006 08:28 PM

I like remakes. Sometimes sounds like a different song all together. Couple more off the top of my head:
Dave Mason- All along the Watchtower- My all time favorite rendition
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush - Purple Haze
English Beat- Tears of a Clown
Roy Buchanan- Hey Joe
Joe Jackson's- San Francisco Fan

afterhours 01-06-2006 08:32 PM

......does the mothers cover of happy together count?

Thats because Dylan is/was a great peot/songwriter,
but a hack as a performer!!!

Just the opposite,
Frank Sinatra was the most successful performer of the last 100 years, but I don't think he wrote 1 song or played 1 instrument

Backbeach Jake 01-06-2006 08:41 PM

Never wrote a hit song or could decide what key to sing in. Old Blue Eyes was a real curiosity. I like his stuff, but what made him a star?

ProfessorM 01-06-2006 08:42 PM

A voice like that is the consummate instrument. Frank ruled in the 40's-60's

I'm reluctant to admit I own Dub side of the moon because every song is lame with th exception of time. Please don't blaspheme Animals that way.Learn about Blue Floyd, you'll be glad you did.

Katie 01-06-2006 09:03 PM

i like "how soon is now" by love spit love better then the original by the smiths..

Nebe 01-06-2006 09:04 PM

you have to hear les claypools version of animals to understand.. I honestly think its a better version. tighter, more explosive in parts.... its excellent, and best of all buckethead is on guitar :hihi:
blue floyd?? i will do a search :cputin:

I think he's actually a pretty good rythmn guitarist and at times has had great backing bands, most of the key parts of the Band being one of them.

Definitely an unreliable performer though, I've seen both incredible shows as well as boring, incoherent ones...

Mike P 01-06-2006 10:10 PM

I prefer Derek and the Dominoes' version of Little Wing to Hendrix's.

Sinatra's genius was in phrasing, articulation and clarity of tone. He was to the human voice what Doc Severinsen is to the trumpet. Who I never really "got" was Dean Martin :rollem:

PI guy 01-06-2006 10:16 PM

Foo Fighters covering Floyds "Have a Cigar" gets my vote, soooooo good. Grohl rocks!!!:jump:

Bill L 01-06-2006 11:31 PM

Another good cover album is "Deadicated" with various artists doing different GD songs -- Suzanne Vega-Cassidy, Burning Spear-Prophet, Elvis Costello- Ship of Fools are some

I dont know, I like the Dub Side, especially Us & Them

Sea Dangles 01-07-2006 08:23 AM

Listened to Dub side this A.M. with 18 month old groovin'.I swear U-roy is part of the vocals. For good dub music check out any Scientist.Any live Bunny Wailer will get you movin, older the better but some of the newer bootlegs will do.Blackheart Man:kewl:Hard to findbtu worth it is his Live from 1983.Sly Dunbar;Simply Sly Man or Sly-go_ville both are deep roots LP's
