Outboard motor swap?
:cputin:
I have a 1999 15 hp Yamaha on my sons 11' Whaler or a 1997 40hp Rude' that I would like to trade 1 or both for a 20-25 hp shortshaft for my kids 11' Whaler. The boys want more speed and power for the BFT fishing they want to do next summer (Joke). Need a little extra for tubing and stuff. |
I don't have a motor for you , but I would reccomend one of the honda 25HP four strokes. The guy at my slips rents skiffs with them and they seem bulletproof, and I think a tank of gas lasts half a summer. I think they also make 30HP and 40HP, but I am not familiar with them. quiet as a whisper, too.

Careful with a four stroke on a short whaler, they're much heavier than the 2 strokes. I've seen seen more than one swamped stern down on a mooring after a storm.

30 hp
I have a 30 hp Merc 2 stroke 15" shaft elec. start with about 3 hrs. on it. I need a 15 hp for my inflatable. Pm with details if you're interested.

I think the 30 will be too heavy...

I have a friend with a 35hp on his and it is just fine!! The kid will love it!!
|
I have seen as much as an older Merc 40HP 2 stroke on a 13 foot Whaler, but MTC said he had an 11 footer, which I am not picturing right now.

I find that hard to believe, maybe you meant it was on a 13'??? A 35 on an 11' that boat doesn't have enough freeboard to hold it. I have a 9.9 on my 11 ft. garvey with a 5' beam and the thing flies, does 20 mph and I pull a kid on a tube with it. It almost dangerous by myself in it, I definately use a lanyard. |
MTC,
Be sure to check the Coast Guard motor rating for the boat. If you over power the boat and have an accident you may be held civilly or criminally responsible. |
I have a 13' that came with a 40, it was much more seaworthy when I replaced it with a 25hp 2 stroke. The 25hp 2 stroke would be as much as I would do on the 11', maybe a 30 but no more than that. The key to the smaller boats is having a light motor. Try the tohatsu, the name may be hard to pronounce, but they're really light.
|
There is no more plate on the boat... I'll search the internet to see what I can find.

MTC, post a pic, one of us will know it.:btu:

I worked at the factory years ago, and based on some literature that I dug up, the max Hp on the 11' Standard was 10 Hp. Then the max on the 11' Sport and Super Sport was upgraded to 20 Hp.
