Changing Color of Plastics/Rubber
Any ideas?
To make a lure (like a Slug-Go) a different color and not with a marker. Any dies or paint to soak items in? Thanks for any ideas and info. Mike |
now why would one want to got through all the trouble and mess to change the color of a rubber lure, especially where the color will probably not hold. Slugo makes all the colors you could possibly fish and they are only about a buck to a buck and a half each. Also there are many other lures out there that come in every conceivable color.
just my two cents:hee: |
Why
I have some stuff already (older stuff) that I want to make black.
:hee: Anyone? |
changing colors-sluggos
Here's a few things I'm aware of:
1. I use a permanent marker (black or whatever you prefer) let them sit for a while then wipe loose ink off. With time the ink penetrates the sluggo 2. Here's a neat trick. Mix a few sluggos of 2 different colors together in a plastic bag. For example, if you mix Pink and white sluggos together, the pink will bleed into the white an you will have a marble effect. ( I think this works best with the pink or red and black sluggos bleeding into the white) Green works too. 3. My buddy use to soak them overnight is die (purple) - works great and he caught a ton of bass on them. 4. when your all done, add some smelly jelly and catch LARGE. |
I think you're right on with the soak them in smelly jelly idea, more than changing colors.

Here's another tip. First soak the sluggos in warm water & dry them with a paper towel to take the oily stuff off. The marker adheres better and the sharpies don't die as fast. Then color the sluggo, let them sit overnight, then wipe the excess marker off with a papertowel. |
From another site
guy replied with this tip: Rit dye and plastics in a sealed container for a couple days..going to try it.
God Bless The Internet! :btu: |
and Add eyes !
oops. I almost forgot. Once you have the color you want, you'll want to add some eyes.
1. with the tip of a hook, pin, nail, etc. puncture the sluggo where you want the eyes to line up. 2. buy a pack of dolls eyes from you favorite tackle shop/craft shop. 3. with a file or sandpaper, scratch the plastic backing of the doll's eyes to they will adhere to the sluggo. 4. Lay the sluggos on their side ( do a bunch at a time) 5. add a drop of superglue where you punctured the sluggo, spread open the rubber so it penetrates a little and lay the eye on top. let dry overnight , flip the sluggos and repeat on the other side. Note, for some reason, the glue does not adhere well to the blue/silver sluggos. I think the material may be different (or I need to try a different superglue). did I mention TO- ADD SOME SMELLY JELLY AND CATCH LARGE ? |
Looking at barbell eyes
last time I saw a live eel was two years ago and I think it had black pupils with a gold-yellow iris....so....was thinking of getting barbell style eyes to match.

Eye's??
Wow,
Holy Crap, If you guys have the time to add doll eyes to a Sluggos you must have time to come shovel my driveway too. |
Presentation - more important than color. Find the fish and you are golden.:kewl:

allright, this is the last secret trick i am going to let out this winter.. I do what joe says, then place the bag on top of your defroster vent in your car... leave it there for a while- the heat will speed up the bleeding. Oh, and you can put some smelly jelly in there too, but make sure the bag is CLOSED TIGHT!! otherwise, you will have to take yoru car to the wrecking yard. :yak:

Keep that secret
and make me a glass black pearl eel :wiggle:

Spike-It
Go to Bass Pro Shops and you will find spike-it dies, great stuff and it will not only add color, but they come in various scents as well. Down at the Thames a hot mix is a white split tail, with the tail dipped in chartreuse garlic spike-it.
