Saltiga question(s)
OK I am going to give one of these a whirl this season. What size would be ideal for a 10' XRA 1204 fishing 40# braid and do you have any suggestions on where to purchase it. ( a bunch are for sale on ebay I see)
Thanks |
4500

What is the model just below the saltiga.I was thinkin bout tryin that one for the ditch.
|
Yeah, lots of ones on Ebay - Japan models. Much lower $, but pay attention to the retrieve ratios! Buyer beware.
I see no advantage to the 6:1 at all. I much rather use one that was 4.5:1 or slower. Slow gear ration means more power. I bet the higher ratio binds under a heavy load. Mores strain on gears is how I look at it. Lowest for the SA Z4500 (4.9:1) I have seen is around 600. I can't get myself to spend that much..... lol. JoeP - u must be making too much. ;) |

Ray 6 to 1 works well in the canal when retrieving jig one after another.
use the rod to do the work once a fish is on, a spinning reel is not a boat reel. that's where one use of 6 to 1 comes in handy NIB get the real one like Jim has or better yet like Blong has |
I've got the Z5000 with an additional 5000GT long cast spool.
Blong uses the Z6000. We've been usin' them for over a year now and agree that the Saltiga is a great canal reel for jigging. Don't worry about the weight - you get used to it quickly. |

If the rod you have is the new heavier 1204 (1-4 oz), my new set-up this year is a St Croix Avid 10' (1-4 ounces) and a Saltiga 5000. I obviously haven't fished it yet but like JPowers said it balances nicely. Monster of a reel... |

NIB,
I'll be at the show if I can, but I've been lookin' back over my shoulder and they're gaining on me. |
I was able to play around with the blast and the saltiga Z and they are some bad a$$ reels! I was very impressed but the reel seemed VERY heavy.

Well if I don't see ya up there Then hopefully when u look back over ur shoulder up on the service rd.U'll see me then.:D |
I had my 4500 on my 1201M at times. It balanced out nice, but I run a somewhat long butt section. I think this helped to balance the rod out a bit. I was speaking to Kadir of Aquaskinz yesterday about the reels, and he had his on an Arra 1205 and liked it. He too runs a long butt. I held a 5000 a few weeks back at the Springfield show. It seemed large to me, but I may just be used to the 4500 now. I used to run a VS 300 and never really thought that was too big. I think you will be fine with the 4500 on any 10' rod. Not sure I would go too much bigger unless the blank was really light.

I use a 4500 on an Arra 1322, it's a good match and you can can to the end of the earth with this setup.

Its the speed an line capacity that has me in need. The only thing worse than reelin a jig back in the canal is gettin hung an not reelin a jig back.some drifts I will let 150 yds of line out.I would like a reel to have at least a 300 yd capacity of 30 lb fireline about 12 or 15 lb mono equivilent.Fightin a good fish in that current makes fast work of some lesser reels. My nautil after one week in the ditch is basically a bunker snaggin reel.JP says they hold up so i got the green light. |
NIB,
If you end up hating the damn thing, I'm pretty sure Slipknot wouldn't mind adding it to his vast inventory. |
I also have a 1322 too so it sounds like a 4500 will find a home on one on of them.
Is it easy to find extra spools for these? Thanks. |
If you have 150 yards of line ( 450 feet) out and you hook something, your not fishing, your praying your going to land it.
Just my thoughts. |
Done it.
They call it Gorilla Jiggin.U cast out an u just let it go.as it starts to come back up the bank thats where the fish where. Its 2 cast's away easily I figured I was putting it at least 75 yds out there. It very well could have been closer to 200 yds. |
1 problem i can neither read or write in jap' how the heck do you fill out the reg. card . 6000gt but still got the Q:think:
|
Couldn't figure the registration card thingie out myself so I contacted them. As long as you have the reciept for the reel (so I was told) that will surfice as the registration card. I'm pairing the 4500 with a GSB1201L and it balances real nice. Can't wait to try it out...just a few short weeks left.

I don't know if this can help, but here are the top end reels sold by Daiwa in Europe :
- Saltiga (available in 4500, 6500, hi speed or hi torque : GT, expedition...) - Saltiga blast (only available in 4000 / 4500) : most features are the same At a lower price you should consider a "capricorn 4500 J" (I insist on the "J"), or a Twinpower. Hope this helps ! Olivier |
