Penn with braid

Hello, I am new to this board but not new to Striper fishing, and I am looking to buy a new spinning reel for my sluggo/bomber 9' allstar rod and have been using shimano's (spheros/stradic) most of my fishing life and i'm considering trying a penn and would like to know how the perform with braid most likely 30# powerpro. Thanks for any help you could offer.

Oh yeah Adam Vinatieri is dead to me, the #%$##@ Colt's!!!

I had no problem

using braid on a penn slammer.

If your gonna use power pro on a slammer, I'd go with 50 lb preferrably, 40 lb minimum.

Huh? I threw 30... no problem whatsoever. Had a buddy who came up to visit use it for a weekend. Never used braid, he also had no problem.

I ran 30lb fireline on my slammer 560 and never had a problem. Be sure to put some mono backing on first though.

Rockport24 03-22-2006 09:33 AM

just had my slammer 560 spooled with 30 pound power pro based on the recommendations of people on this board and the guys at surfland, we shall see. They used dacron backing.

If it is an older penn model, 5500ss, 704, 706, etc... I would recommend fireline instead of pp. I don't own a slammer so I don't know if pp works well on it.

What size rod did you pair the 560 with?

Personal preference I guess. 30 lb felt way to light to me and I found that wind nots went down considerably with 50 lb. Now I've switched to using only fireline and stren superbraid, like them more than PP.

have 20 fire on all my penn's backed with mono, no problems.

i can concur with the increase in wind knot's using both the 30 and 40 lb pp with the slammer 560. i am trying the 50 lb pp this year on my spheros 8000.

As long as you make sure the line does not cross the face of the spool, wind knots are a non-issue.

ss6500

it hates 30, 20 power pro. I'm not going with penn next, I need a reel that will cast the 30 and not knot:confused:

stripercrazy 03-22-2006 04:47 PM

pencil popping

I like working a pencil and throwing for distance, the thicker the braid the less it will cast.

Which All Star?

I have a 560 Slammer on an All Star 1088, spooled with 40# Power Pro. I'd be a little concerned about using the set-up for Bombers. What I do is close the bail by hand, and put a little tension on the braid with my hand as I start the retrieve---once the tension of the lure is felt, then I just retrieve normally.

patswin 03-22-2006 07:51 PM

not sure which # all star I believe its rated 3/4-3oz something in that range.

patswin 03-22-2006 08:09 PM

Derr not sure what I was thinking it is a rainshadow blank.

scoobe 03-22-2006 08:22 PM

Used both 30 and 50 # PP on Slammer 460's and can't say I noticed any difference in the wind knotage factor.

I have had problems with the 6500 and PP up to 50lbs. The reel doesn't like it.

baldwin 03-24-2006 07:46 AM

Definitely Fireline. You'll love it. 20# or 30#, you make the call. I've used it for years, wouldn't change.
