So far I have in from one source on Herring...

So far I have in from one source on Herring that RI DEM has passed an emergency measure on the total ban of herring, alewives and bluebacks in RI, terra firma or on the water. This is a possesion regulation, so that stocked herring in the freezer is in violation of the new DEM regulations.

I'm waiting for more confirmation but this is much in line with what I expected based on recent conversations and last week's meeting...

:claps: That's a good move.

this is good gor the fishers of Herring in the future also. Just like Striped Bass, we will do our share to get the stocks back and then will be able to agressively protect them. Even though we know there is some interaction at sea there is no direct commercial fishery for alewives. We can get loud after taking a moratorium.

John,
I have heard exactly the same thing. No possession period, end of story.

Will this include the foreign processing ships that are supposed to be targetting the atlantic herring as well?

Atlantic Herring don't fall under the River Herring umbrella...

Does anyone have concrete evidence of the interaction between the river herring and offshore herring schools mixing and getting netted?

I attended the RICRMC meeting earlier this month and they voted to follow the Mass and CT ban with input from DEM. Bottom line is that the stock are off dramatically. Reasons not really clear but it's a "Big Picture" thing as it's not just the RI or Mass or Ct runs. It's all of them.

Excellent move.

John, as I understand it river herring spend 7 or so yrs in the ocean, and return to spawn. Im sure at some point they must my mixing, interacting with proper sea herring no??
