Deadliest Catches on tv tonight
 

Just a reminder that Discovery will be airing the start of season 2, of the Deadliest Catches tonight at 9pm. I was addicted to the show last season.

What are your thoughts on the deck boss from the Northwestern? I can't stand that guy. He seems like the biggest ego freak, know-it-all on the show. I couldn't believe it when the captain was asking him his opinion on weather they should stick the storm out. People like him get people killed because they have so much to prove.

Yeah - he's the captains little brother - so there's that sibling rivalry thing going on - probably bitter 'cause he's slinging bait and big bro is dry in the wheelhouse.

I can't imagine being on a boat like that with 40ft waves and 60kt winds. I'd feel real uncomfortable without a sail. You lose power and you are toast (like that one boat that blew a head gasket).

Im not totally up on the new crab rules - but as i understand it it's not a race anymore. Each boat has its poundage quota and you can take your time catching it - correct?? So why not wait out the storm???

Makes you wonder if the guy is being brave and tough because the camera is in his face or is he really that soft. Out of all the boats out there, the crew of the Northwestern seem to have their Sh!t together the most though. Their boat is huge, looks relatively knew and they usually produce.

How about those other boats though? One blows a head gasket, one sets sail several days late after finally passing their safety inspection and the third keeps blowing hydrolic lines and snapping off gear.

The same boat that limped back to port this week looks like it will have major problems on the next episode. I wonder how those guys live int he offseason? One week they can make 30,000+-.

I commercial fished for two years on a gill-netter out of chatham. The difference from one boat to the next was pretty incredible. We went out in some pretty nasty weather including 35 knot winds in January one year. I will say that what we went out in was nothing compared to what they do in alaska but with the quota that they have in place, some of the risks that they were taking were stupid. I couldn't believe the one boat when he said he was trying to save money and the hydrolics were going out. The second that thing got to port, I'd walk.

This is what they do in the offseason. Tolley fishs on the Hunter out of chatham. That boat is one of the most unseaworthy vessels in the harbor...

Hey Sluggoslinger, the other day, my wife and I took a ride down to Pt.Judith. We were watching the fishing boats leave, as soon as they cleared the rocks, they lowered two things that looked like anchors,one from each side. What are those things for? What are they suppose to do? I heard someone call them "Birds". Is that right?The reason I am asking is because you said the you had worked on one of those boats.

The birds get dropped from the outriggers. They are used to keep the boat more stable in the water.

Used to be just Rebel boats that had the "sissy sticks", now every scalloper out of New Bedford has them. Stable boat means drags stay on bottom= more $$.
