Got Ants?
 

I'm sure there are plenty of you already overrun with an ant colony gone wild throughout your kitchen.

While I'm no expert in the finer details of insect prevention, I can tell you this...

The products from Terro www.terro.com have nuked our ant issues within 24 hours two springs in a row. Nothing else I've tried works a tenth as well.

Note: This was only a public service announcement to help fix the household issues before the bass show up in force!

Thanks for the link. We'll try anything. Been a problem at my house every spring for as long as I can remember.

What's nice is you don't need to spray anything or spread borax powder around the house :yak6:

I place a 1/2 dozen indoor liquid traps around the kitchen and another 1/2 dozen of the larger outdoor traps in the dirt cellar under the kitchen...

About 13 bucks total...Seriously, 24 hours and they were history.

We had a big carpenter ant problem last year. I shot a line of that gooey jelly under the bottom of the siding where it hit the foundation. GONE
If it happens again I'll try that Terro stuff thanks Spence

I think they move on a particualr phase of the moon this tiem of year, we ahve them coming up between the expansion joint in the concrete floor every year at this time.

If you have carpenter ants in your house that means they are living in your walls and that is a huge problem. I build alot of houses and work closely with an exterminator to pre-treat stud bays and the like before we seal up the house. He tells me if you are seeing carpenter ants its 99 percent likley they are living in the walls, they don't come in from the outside looking for food. They need sugars to survive, you have to treat your house perimeter inside and out to trap them in the wall so they starve to death. You must be dilligent and keep applying the product so they dont get out of the walls. They are also drawn to moist wood so any small leaks you have anywhere, roof windows, doors etc should be promptly taken care of. Ive seen first hand remodeling homes just how nasty these things can be.

Do you have the name of that gooey jelly handy?, and is it chemical based. Anyone know of any "natural" product you can protect your foundation perimeter with. I have heard that motor oil works wonders but I could never bring myself to do that. Not enviro friendly, probaby illegal, and I am extremely chemical phobic. I probably use a couple hundred rubber gloves a year and that is mostly staying away from anything "chemical". Yes I know they probably make a pill for that.

I have had great results with borax and powdered sugar. I also have some natural borax syrup that works well. That kills them on the inside, but would like a way to protect the perimeter.

on what saxatilus said....about wet wood...i had this back porch that had a doubled up floor joist underneath the deck that never would dry out because it couldnt breath.... and when i finally ripped it apart there was the colony thousands of em with all the larve in there too...

certain foods attract them bigtime....one in particular is artificial creamer for coffee.... it attracts them like crazy!!
