Rigging these new eels

I've read that they use Dacronto rig them. Can you use something like 50-60 lb. Mono?

Nebe 04-01-2006 12:17 PM

You can use anything you like- dacron is nice, but i dont like it's knot holding ability... you really have to use alot of super glue or ZAp on the knots.
Mono is fine, but i am not sure if the super glue weakens the line as it cures-
I like to use 60 lb Cortland master braid when i rig mine.

The dacron would be better than a stiff piece of Mono IMO.

We use dacron... but as long as what you choose is not too thick or wiry it should work fine.

Rigging rubba eels

The reason I asked, was ,I tied a couple with 50lb mono. I used the snell knot on both 6/0 circle hooks and look pretty good. Tied one hook to a vise and pulled the other with visegrips and the knots held.

The only thing I have against the mono is its stiffness when its heavy Pound test. For this application , I think you want something super limp like a braid.

You could also use 50-65 lb braid if you have that on hand.

Dacron is best......So supple, so wrapable, so bindingly perfect.
Ohhh - I'm gonna need a minute here.

Jesus... go clean yourself up.

Dacron and Zap a Gap on the knots works best, mono will impede the action a bit.

Ive been using dacron for rigging sluggos for 3 or 4 seasons and i have yet to have on give. Just be sure to use a liberal ammount of zap-a-cap on the knots. I rig mine the same way ive always done my rigged eels, after you do a bunch youll get the hang of it and find out what works for you. I use Gami Hd live bait hooks, adds some weight, plus those hooks are diesel, i cant see one of those bending.

I use dacron or some old 80 lb braid i have off the back end of the spool.Like some one said thicker mone will cut down on the action.
