Crushed glass

A number of the old "plugs", like Captain Bills, used crushed glass on their sides for sparkle. Any idea where I can find some?

send a couple of drunks into ebens shop, then follow.:bl: pretty colors....

steelhead, what color do you want to try??

steelhead 04-10-2006 07:14 AM

Colors

Clear, amber and a soft yellow. Needs to be coarse, like floor sanding paper, but not too sharp edges. The old stuff was "faceted" and would sparkle when the light hit it.

What are you trying to do, cut the fishs mouth all to hell?

I want to dull boo fish teeth :-)

Seriously, a number of the older plugs, like certain captain bills apparently used crushed glass, or something like that, on the sides of the plug for sparkle. I thought I'd try it out.

The original source for that was crushed up burned out christmas tree bulbs that would silver on the inside when they blew. Yellow, white, red and blue were the sought after colors. They would collect them then crush them. True story.

Take a walk through ACMoore, they have all kinds of glittery stuff. Not just glitter either, rhinestones in all sizes and itty bitty beads. It's amazing.

Great idea BBJ! Thanks!

Flap, who used crushed glass ? Gibbs?
I checked a whole bunch and you can see glitter, round and square.
Maybe that thick rubbed on gibbs ? on some lures :bl:

VB, I think Snook Bait might have used that effect on some of their early baits, possibly Russo as well and Jude. Don't think gibbs did.

vineyardblues 04-10-2006 12:57 PM

You may be correct, after all you have all them lures :bl:
I was thinking more of the copy cat kinda just glob's of glue / glitter
I will have to check some snook baits :rotfl:

Creek Chub, some Cap'n Bills and a few others. Stan did on a couple too.

SH, if ya have trouble finding colored Chritmas tree lights, check with

Raven. He used to have them wrapped around his Cameleon terarium

so they would get all confused, and not know what color to turn.:hihi:

Know anyone that works for a highway dept? I have a 3lb coffee can of the "reflective glass beads" they put on the thermoplasti (sp) line markers on streets. They pour the hot paint on then spread the ultrafine glass beads making the lines reflective. Have not tried them as of yet, though

Just a thought
