How stupid can you get?

Fresh off the noon news. 3 men pulled out of the water off of Misquamicut. Thankfully they were OK. But heres the story. They were 2 miles offshore, in 25 knot winds, in a freshwater John boat! I saw film of the boat being towed back into the breachway.

pops 04-21-2006 01:56 PM

on land in nj they are called 'googans' is there a similar term up there?
other than an ocean floater, crab bait, ....:fishslap:

Springtides 04-21-2006 02:39 PM

Smart enough

to have their life jackets on though. Good move on their part.

RIROCKHOUND 04-21-2006 02:42 PM

Hope they were flounder fishing.. or chasing schoolies...
Blackfish season doesnt open till May 1... and there are alot of rockpiles south of Misq... dont make me say the P word...
given there location I'm guessing they weren't flounder fishing....
either way it was pretty stupid, especially given the East winds.. if the forecast is 5-10 easterly my grandfather always said add em togethor, it's gonna be 15kts+
And they used a cell phone.. good thing it didnt get wet... otherwise a submersible vhf would have been a smarter choice....

Saw that on the news yesterday, some people try as hard as they can to kill themselves. From what I gathered, the plug fell out. I don;t know about you guys, but I used to put my plugs in from the inside, so if they did pop, they would be inside. When I re-did my transom last year I ripped my plug sleeve out and installed a garboard.

Raven 04-22-2006 10:16 AM

dont know garboard

but i fiber glassed over my plug and would rather bail than worry bout pluggin a hole...

Skitterpop 04-22-2006 10:24 AM

A garboard is a NPT pipe setup used on the higher end boats, they don't fall out.

Glassing over works if you have easy access to your bilge, you do not want ANY water in there when the weather hits freezing, especially if you have a wood core transom. Water expands and will delamitate the glass allowing water to wic in causing rot.

Without stupid people where would the entertainment industry be? No more AFV, Cops, You gotta see this,Jackass, Jerry Springer etc. Also, stupid people spend lots of money to go to movies about stupid people, rent videos of stupid people. Come on now, stupid people are money makers ( for others).:faga:

"How Stupid Can I Get".....I love that question but there are so many different ways to answer it! Ummmm.......here goes! If I really set my mind to it....I could get pretty stupid....but....to most I think it comes naturally!:laugha:

I've done some pretty stupid things, some that even include, a boat, some booze and sharp hooks. But never two miles off shore. They are lucky to have survived. It's one thing to flip an over-loaded canoe in August out on the resevior, but a john boat 2 miles off shore? Let me guess, tequila was a factor.
