High Speed Reels

Curious, I remembering reading a recent article in "The Fisherman" mag detailing some spinning & conventional high speed reels. Since I can't find this old issue, I was wondering what you guys consider high speed, especially for spinning gear? Main use would be for casting/retrieving from a boat for SBFT but also for getting fish to boat quicker.

Any thoughts/comments?

Daiwa Saltiga Blast 4500 w/30-50 lb. braid is what i use for tuna, i got it from japan last year i'm not sure if the american versions are the same or not. other high end spinners are the shimano stellas 8000-20000 sizes, daiwa saltigas 4500-600 sizes, and shimano spheros reels in sizes from 8000-14000. you could also use a van staal in a 250 or 300 size. i'd say high speed is anything that you can rip a lure across the surface with without having to hold your rod way above your head. all of the reels hold a minimum of 250-300 yards of 50 lb. braid, and the largest of the bunch hold about 500 yards of 65 lb. braid, i think.

I have a penn 545, 6:1 I love it for eeling!! Nothing like letting that fat girl take that eel all the way slaming that hook in and turning her in a split second

Moses,6:1 is super high speed and anything over 5:1 is fast enough to jig the canal. But these are usually larger reels as was mentioned.Unless you have a two speed reel a fast ratio will give you less power for the hardtails.Get a stella 5000.
