How long does it take?

Was wondering....about how long does it take you guys to turn a plug? I'm talking just turning...not drilling and sealing....just to turn.

It takes me anywhere from 20-30 min per plug......seems like a long time, but maybe it isn't. Thanks Guys, Jay

It takes me about 2-3 minutes....if your talking just the body shape on the lathe.

Wow...that's fast....what size stock do you use and is it square to start?

I normally use 2x2 square stock......maybe I need better chisels.

2x2 square stock AYC, it used to take me about 15 minutes each at 1st but like Sportsguy said, you get faster as you go along.

are you using a Roughing Gouge, that shapes the wood round in about 30 seconds.

Ummmmm...:smash: ....maybe that's part of the problem......I use a gouge, but not like the ones I just did a search on.....I bought a cheap set of chisels when I got my lathe to see if I liked it:rolleyes:

Well....I'm addicted now, so maybe I need to upgrade my chisels...I use the same stock as you, so that wouldn't be my problem. Thanks TFD, Jay

If I'm doing a run like Super Swap, the last half takes about 5 minutes apiece. the first half takes about ten. I seem to pick up speed. But.... the same plug done in maple would take me 20 minutes. My machine don't like real hard woods.

About 2 minutes, turned and sanded to 220 grit. No duplicator, just a parting tool, gouge and skew.
