cb radio..

so recently my friends and i have started using cb radios and i heard that you needed some kind of license to use it, even if its just in the house, and not in the car... is this true??

striperjerk1 05-30-2006 02:50 PM

NO. not true.
you only need a license with a ham radio.

I had one in the 70's, I think you have to register with like the FCC or something to get your call letters.

Katie you dont need a license. Just be kind to the truck drivers and stay off Ch.19

I'm always nice... and whats with Channel 19?? lol but my best friend and i, he drove up at about 9pm sunday night with one in his truck and we were sitting there just talking to guy from alabama and stuff, it was funny as heck..

FCC... i read something about that...but call letters, for what?

19 is the trucker's channel. I don't know about now, but in the seventies, CB was useful everywhere but Massachusetts and New York City, because of hecklers. Most people used to listen to 19 for traffic reports, police activity, and general babble, If a discussion was started in an area where many people were using 19, someone would say " kick it up to 22" or some other channel so as to not crowd 19. Most truckers will speak as if they were around kids, so it is okay to listen. Eventually you will understand what they are talking about. If you don't understand something, ask. Women and children will usually get good treatment as most truckers have wives and kids at home. If you hear something that makes you uncomfortable, turn the channel or turn it off. It's a good idea not to let others know what vehicle you are in. In the days before cellphones, you could ask for a landline and someone would often make a phone call for you if you were broken down on the side of the road or in any kind of trouble.
