Slipknot 06-01-2006 07:45 PM

NOBODY has any business casting from behind you no matter what.
I would cut the guys line and hand over hand it and keep the plug.
good way to hurt someone.

So let me see if I understand this--after I walk to my spot, and risk my neck climbing down the rocks to the waterline near low tide, lugging my rod and plug bag, and then am fortunate enough to have fish break right in front of me, I'm supposed to hold up my cast to allow someone standing on the road to let fly at the fish?

Uh, huh

Now, after I move 50', if the guy on the road doesn't hook up, and they break right in front of me, do I have to hold up again and move another 50'? :wall:

Dave, I hope yer just stirring the pot a little here :humpty:

Absolutely uncalled for. This happened to my brother and I last year at Murderer's Row. Three bikers showed up and started casting right over me from the road. I don't have much patience for that kind of sh_t and I let them know it. They proceeded to ask me what I was going to do about it. My brother was about 30-50' feet away and came over and asked if there was a problem. Only took a few seconds for them to realize we weren't going to tolerate that kind of intrusion (if they had asked, maybe a different story). I'm sorry, just plain rude and not sportsmanlike......

TheSpecialist 06-01-2006 08:42 PM

Zing 5oz from the waterline over their head and see how they like it. I am with Slip I would cut line

Skitterpop 06-01-2006 08:54 PM

If you really need to cast over someone a sleep - nerve gas bomb is best. That way the fisher doesn`t even know what happened so there is no hard feelings.

Though I cannot fathom someone who would do that :fishslap:

BigFish 06-01-2006 09:10 PM

4 ounce Hopkins......problem solved!:lasso:

Mike P 06-01-2006 09:11 PM

One more question---if I'm using a Squidder and Harnell, instead of being a monkey with a hi-tech outfit, can I go ahead and cast, or do I still have to wait for the guy up top to unload first :bl:

BigFish 06-01-2006 09:14 PM

Let the guy up top take the first cast (like he is going to ask anyway) and while he is retrieving.....roll his bike into the canal!:btu:

Mike P 06-01-2006 09:16 PM

Ever have your thumb slip off the spool during your backcast? :zup: :devil2:

I have a feeling I know the 3 you talk about. They're referred to as "The Greeks" down there. Kids from Brockton. They do it ALL THE TIME! We've confronted them about it saying if their plug breaks off, we're gonners. Their reply is "It won't" and they keep casting. Mayhem at best!

No business at all casting over someone! It is just calling for an accident or an "Incident" :rocketem: :rocketem: :rocketem:

Funny to see a post about this. Went to the ditch for the first time in a couple years (used to fish it more when I lived in Wareham) last weekend with the 'breakin' tides' and was in awe when the bike guys showed up and started launching from the bike path. The water was so low I don't know if I could reach it from the path! And here I was so happy to be wading in the ditch for the first time. I thought these we're the canal "sharpies" and I was thinking I need a bike and one of those snazzy conv. rigs. Didn't see them catch anything though, they were gone as soon as they came, apparently chasing that one bass I saw chasing that one piece of bait on top right at daybreak.... I like to relax when I fish, that's probably the most appeallling thing about it. Fishing the canal everyday when it's busy reminds me of the morning commute. :yak6:

b-f dont get me wrong..... its wrong to cast over any ones head imo if you know the guy its still not wright .but a smart caster knows how to work a cast. the guy thats on the rocks should be first on the cast ,not the guy on the road i,m for the man on the rocks.. its rude and crude to cast over the head of a stranger....

stiff tip 06-02-2006 04:48 AM

mike ...u read my thread wrong...the man on the water cast first all around and the biker should move the 50 ft dwn ...fu*k the bike guys ,but yrs ago we would cast overhead of the people you know .we were all friends... this past wknd was a mad house for some and word of a 50 # and ideal tides ..the monkeys came out of the woods.

pretty slanderous stuff right there.

Mike P 06-02-2006 06:56 AM

Sorry Dave. Read it wrong.

I have to admit I've cast from the road, but never over anyone's head---or, at least never over the head of anyone I wasn't friends with ;)

It's basically the same deal as when a bunch of guys are standing at the water and a fish breaks. If I see it before anyone else, I'm casting on it. Even if it's not right in front of me. If someone else gets on the break first, I hold up. If the guy misses, the fish is fair game for anyone else :humpty:

reelecstasy 06-02-2006 07:08 AM

Too friggin dangerous, I think my thumb might slip as well on the back cast. No way I would put up with that. And no doubt I would cross his line.

crash 06-02-2006 07:48 AM

A 4oz jig would be heading towards their temple at light speed.

MrHunters 06-02-2006 08:03 AM

man, i feel bad for you guys having to deal with this... i feel a slight bit guilty that every time i go down to my beach im the only one there. grant it only schoolies so far but im not complaining.

RIROCKHOUND 06-02-2006 08:06 AM

Not to be an Ass, because I've dealt with idiots over here, especially fishin in current (i.e. guys fishing too light and snagging you every cast) along with spot jumpers, close casters etc..

But honestly how many people would cast AT somebody in retribution, and how many people are just talk?

reelecstasy 06-02-2006 08:13 AM

There is just one person that I knew if I found him I had 100% full intentions of casting a hopkins at. Still keeping my eye out for him...
With that said, I would just cross his line and let him know why....

Bronko 06-02-2006 08:22 AM

I had this happen to me last year at the canal and I posted about it. It is getting worse. I was at a spot for a couple of hours throwing surface plugs to breaking fish that were sliding by with the current. It just so happened that a nice pod crashing on bait parked right in front of me for an extended period of time. So as expected the fellas to my right and left started casting directly in front of me..... but all of a sudden I hear a commotion and the whizzing of conventional reels. No less that 4 big wooden plugs were lauched above me from the service road. I had hooked up while their plugs were airborne. They were casting and retrieving right over my line as I was fighting the fish. Once the fished moved they mounted up on their trikes and followed the fish without a care in the world. I personally wouldn't think about casting over somebodys head out of respect AND safety.

And by the way. They were the GREEKS without a doubt!!:smokin:

Flaptail 06-02-2006 08:41 AM

sTiFfY, you cast over my head, you die.:eek5:

Now we Road rage, check out line rage, and now fishing rage.

People suck.

JohnR 06-02-2006 09:45 AM

I just read this thread. I think casting behind someone regardless of where is ludicrous unless you absolutely know the person and have a method to the madness that all share. I recall a few years ago at Wasque someone getting a chin full of trebbles and almost getting a free improvised face lift because they were too close behind an angler...

I guess one thing to cast from the road but another to cast over someone. Sure nothing might go wrong but what if it does?

Skitterpop 06-02-2006 10:10 AM

Taser :lasso:

Bigcat 06-02-2006 10:17 AM

I live close enough to the canal to ride my bike there, a few weeks ago three guys tried to get me off my spot said it was their's.I told them if they wanted to fish it they should have gotten here at 4:00 am like I did.
One guys says he is going to cast over my head,I told him I would cut his line if he did, they left in a huff.

Swimmer 06-02-2006 10:29 AM

It comes around, rude people have a way getting whatscoming to them. :uhuh:

gone fishin 06-02-2006 10:55 AM

Absolutely uncalled for! Anyone casting over my back is totally out of line. I always have two rods rigged - one with topwata and one with a heavy jig in the ditch. If I was plugging, I would reel in real quick and throw the heavy over the plug and bring it to shore. tangled plugs get cut off!! If I didn't keep it it would be dropped by accident into the current.:nailem:
I think that the regulars would surely back me up. Especially if they see it happening.:hihi:
That plug cast from the path is just as dangerous on the pick up as it is flying overhead.:eyes:
