replacement rod tip
 

Hey guys,
About to put a replacement rod tip on an Okuma that I broke the tip off.
My question is as follows: the break is pretty even, but should it cut it to be perfectly even, and if so, what should I use to cut, as the rod is graphite and I'm afraid it wil splinter.

Wire strippers/cutters will work , place them where there is no more splintering of the blank and twist them gradually increasing the pressure until it is cut evenly. You may have to remove the last guide or reposition it between the new tip and the 2nd guide. Sometimes you get lucky and you get away with just putting the new tip on.

If it's a clean break leave it alone and find a tip that will fit but if not...
I've used a dremel with a cut off wheel and i have also used a fine tooth coping saw.. either way make sure you place the part you are going to cut on a block of wood and apply pressure.. also make sure you cut into the wood too and not just the blank. I have done this to both graphite and fiberglass rods in the past.

Another thing you might want to do also is to use a micrometer or calipers and measure the thickness to where you can get a tip that will fit nicely instead of an inbetween size.

I'd wrap the tip with masking tape for 3 to 5 turns before cutting to prevent splintering. Works pretty good for the graphite that I have cut in the past. I think a dremel cut off wheel or a fine hacksaw blade would work best for you without crushing anything.

Cut it to a standard tip size. Makes on sence to cut it and have to wrap it with thread to fill a gap.
