... with Trayder (who runs http://classicseacraft.com - a great and very new Seacraft site) and we livelined herring off Jamestown for a few fish up into the mid twenties. Lot's of fun. THe fish were a little lethargic but it's still only early May fer cryin' out loud :D ...

Anthony - Tattoo is right. This time of year I don't think it makes a difference. Those fish were easily caught in plug distance from shore. We weren't more than 100 feet out. Fact of the matter is that the 30' ledge where the fish were more prominent was still only 60 feet or so from the furthest point you could (maybe) walk out to. Not exactly a place I would consider hauling live herring to from shore because of how far it appeared to be from paths or road & parking but it was certainly close.

We also fished the ledge more than the inshore side. It's entirely possible the fishing was better in tight to but just didn't want to put the boat too close to the rocks...

Neither of us had fished this spot before from shore or from boat. We decided on it due to several factors: where the wind was coming from, what the current was doing, all of the structure you could possibly ask for, deep ledge REAL close to shore - plus it just smelled "Fishy" :D

To be honest, this time of year I think 2 hours before sunset is the best, then things slow down a bit into the night.

Clammer - it felt like 5 minutes to get there from Portsmouth to Beavertail - GPS read 48 KNOTS :D in some swellage

Tatt - I think the early morning bite is just as good - would have been there 90 minutes earlier had 'cept for some bait issues... The best action was early...

A rookie question, what kind of setup (like rod-reel combo and line test) do you use to liveline your herring and how much longer into the year will that work? Thanks, congrats on those sweet fish.

Nice day fish, but they ain't 50's, you didn't catch them from shore, you weren't slinging eels, you hadn't lost tons of sleep fishing into the dead of night, you didn't sweat your arse off tr#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g out to your spot in hip waders, so I'm afraid you really should pull this post. Not only that, you should be ashamed bragging about schoolie size fish, what has come over you, don't you have a family code or something:)?

Lou - no prob... I was actually using a 9' Batson 1088 surf rod and Calcutta 400. Not exactly a prime boat rod but I actually like using the surf rod on a boat and I feel it has certain advantages that outweigh the "too long for a boat" factor. That reel is also perfect in that range - boat or surf. Trayder - the owner of the boat - has some nice St Croix 7'5 boat rods with Penn 975LD reels which were and awesome combo that I got the smaller fish on.

I was using 20# Berkley Game Green with 25# Triplefish Flouro Leader (just started using that) and Trayder had 30# Yozuri Hybrid with a 40# flouro leader.

At best, you're only going to get live herring from the runs until some point in June, early June most likely. Then for live baits, you can snag Menhaden (if you can find them) or eels (much better at night or fished very deep during the day). Either setup would be fine for both although you probably should use a boat rod ;)
