Trolling Rod for Lead Core Line
I'm looking for a trolling rod to use with lead core line on a vintage Penn Senator 112H reel. I already have two Penn Senator trolling rods (model# NL 3130WL, I think) but they are too stiff for inshore trolling.. Any suggestions on what trolling rod to buy?
I don't plan on using wire line but I've rediscovered lead core line. How do you guys attach lead core line to a leader? I've tried tying 17# and 27# test leadcore line to a long (30 foot?) fluorocarbon leader using a tiny Japanese barrel swivel that will pass through the guides on the rod but the barrel swivel has loosened (broken) the guide on the top of one of my light-duty inshore rods. Any suggestions on how to attach this line to a leader? Thanks, everyone. Bill |
Blood knot , best to remove enough lead from line to tie knot.
Nothing beats fish a custom rod !!! Mike cc of M&Ds make great rods !:humpty: |
For dragging lead, I use and the Ugly Stick tiger series, 7" 20-50# line. I forget the price, but it was under a $100.

Soft tip rod and an Albright Knot. P.

I have two identical set-ups.
The rod is a Ugly stick BWLB 1100 its 7' M action Reels are PENNS 330 GTIs.(levelwinds) Perfect set-up with level winds for when I have people on board who don't know how to feed the line back on. |
THe best I ever did was a lamiglass 963m custom made into a trolling rod. I have two matching for the boat.
I am not sure what the replacement for the lami is. Bill |
Thanks for the recommendations, Guys. I'll try those rods and those two knots.

Bill you may also want to try this knot.
Remove around 5 inches of the lead core then feed your leader into the hollow spot until you hit the lead. then just tie an overhand knot. |

It don't make sense, but thats what I found, so now I leave the lead in. Try it both ways. Oh and I tie something like a double bimini, one line tied on the other. Its not a knot you will find online, its passed down from generations.....just experient and find the best for your set-up. |
With all the fishing crap I have I didn't have any lead core set ups and last season needed a set up "yesterday". So I took a older penn sitting in its box brought it into the the shop and said, put some leadcore on this. It worked OK but I could not get two spools of lead core on there. How much lead can you get on the 330GTI? Do you have backing or do you just load as much of the leadcore as possible?
FISHON is a big leadcore guy now:usd: |
IMO, If you need more than 100 yds of lead, use wire or drails to get down.
