I go straight to wire, but i know others who swear by using a leader. From your posts it sounds like you've got the spots and the gear, now its time for trial and error so you can come to your own conclusion. If you love fishing, learning what works (for you) is the best part. And remember it's 99% luck anyway. :rotf2:

I use about 10' of 65lb flouro with an albright not to the wire.

Yes fishsmith,I do have spots and gear,Im mostly out about 1-2 miles off chatham, have lots of "luck" with other methods just not using eels or jigs, have tried them alongside commercial boats only to be skunked...

Wire to jig works fine like I said in other post.

I use a 40# leader for a few reasons:
It imakes it easier to lift a short, or bluefish over the gunwale by grabbing the leader - no glove needed.
The wire does not kink if the fish starts thrashing on the deck (esp bluefish)
A few wraps of mono that ends up over the wire on the reel seems to prevent it from getting sprung and loose.

Lucky star. Are you using wire alongside the commercial boats that are also using wire?

I find that if I'm not catching, its time to start switching things up. Change the weight of the jig, color add pork rind or other scent...

Chatham is great fishing. I've had a boat in chatham since I was 15 and what I've found is that you have to keep trying different things until you find what they want. Allot of people think Chatham is the Mecca for great fishing but the problem is you get a million boats out there. You'll even see fish below your boat but they are all spooked from the traffic in chatham. Especially when you have the yahoo's who drift the rips then go full throttle back over them and f'n spook every fish around them.

Beleive me i will keep trying, Im out there an awful lot , i have lots of succes with other methods on keeper bass, like i said I just havent been able to do it jigging , But I will keep at it. as far as the yahoos i knoew exactly what your talking about , when it gets that crowded i go to deeper water..

Use 35' of 50-80# mono to Spro a swivel then using a haywire twist and barrel wraps connect the swivel to the wire. If your strickly jigging use .025 wire, jigging and umbrellas .028, strickly umbrellas .033. The long mono leader adds a little stretch; wire has a tendancy to open holes up in their mouths, and this will help. Also it helps to mark your wire with thin cut electrical tape 1/8" wrapped onto the wire... 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400 1 to 10 ratio for depth at 3 knots. Thats 1 foot deep for every 10 feet of wire.

I mark my wire as well except I put a break with dacron every 100'. By doing that, I'll try to have the dacron on the roller when I jig so I don't kink or put stress points on my wire.

I also hardly use wire off chatham. I prefer light tackle and think its more effective at some of my more productive spots.

I learned to jig tying wire direct to jig with two passes of the wire through the brass ring on the jig with a haywire. 99.5% of the time the bass couldn't care less. If it isn't working, shift gears.

LS, you say you are in deeper water. That may be the reason you are not hooking up with the same percentage as the comm guys. They are closer to the bottom.

ill tie my jig to a Ten foot leader of about 60 pound test. i do this mostly so that when the fish gets close to the boat, i have some give to teh line and dont worry as much about it snapping. the leader will go around the spool a few times once the fish is close thereby giving you some extra backup
