YoYo bait inside my buddies bass
He was fishing with scup near the comm fleet and picked up a decent fish with a buldging belly. Inside was a partially digested stapled up baitfish that looked like a bunker and a large lead weight inside the bait fish.
Isn't this both an unethical and non- legal way to fish for bass? Is there really a law that says you can't yo-yo for bass? |
I heard its deadly though... You don't have any more discription on how that was rigged do you? Just curious...
|
He asked me what this was and described it to me fairly well and I said it was probably some of the comm guys yoyoing big bait near the bottom. Few recs actually fish like this. Personally I have never done it and don't know exactly how to rig it but know it goes on. The weight had fallen thru the baitfish and was in the belly of the bass, it was about 8 oz of lead. the baitfish was opened and the weight inserted and baitfish slit was stapled up closed. I didn't get exactly where the hook was but he said he didn't find a hook. The fish also had a second large bait in there as well.
He said he was glad he didn't weigh it in for a contest because he would not want to take the blame for something like this if it was opened up. PS (lots of large fish were brought in yesterday by the comms...several close to 50#) |
As far as I know, yo-yoing is perfectly legal. It targets big bass, well above the 34" commercial minimum. Those fish aren't going to be intentionally released anyway. The problem is breaking one off, as was apparently the case with your friend's. I don't know how much harm the weight causes---but I have cleaned a number of bass over the years that had ingested rocks.
It can cause problems for guys at tournament weigh-ins. Rumor has it that a well known MV charter captain was DQ'd on a Derby winning fish because a yo-yo weight was inside when the Committee opened it up. I also hear it won him a 5 year suspension. |
are you serious?
non-legal to yo-yo? why? should chunking be banned as well? |

not a bait fisherman, but I heard of guys taking lead and sticking it down the mouth of live scup and fishing the bottom. i thought it was perfectly normal? Whats yo-yoing???

No worries ==== you all never knew it existed until the RI boys K/A at M/V;; Sandman ; there are many variations of Y/y ;;if that all you found // then that was not the [true[ setup ] its past deadly /// asked the charter captains on your island how they felt ,when they were sent home packing //w clients or better yet / the captain that was told by a [[WELL KNOWN] client --take me to the RI boat ;;; |

It is not illegal at all...As for rigging it? thats a closely guarded secret and if I say anymore Clammer and others would have my head....Lets say there is more to it than a weight and a coat hanger. In my opinion the best boat fisherman in the universe for Striped -Bass is RI's own Ray Jobin...and he invented the YO-YO....He is a master at it... |

a guy i know of has caught MANY fish over 50 pounds with the yo-yo. i have no clue how it works, but i do know it DOES work. |
Billy ;;
it wasn,t Ray ===== But I guy::: if you saw him on the water /you,d think he was some ya-hoo :gorez: |
Wow, no one willing to share the technique? I thought you guys prided yourselves on being anti-location sharing but pro technique sharing. :jester:

What made ya think that .,.,, ya got a better chance with spot sharing >>><><:sleeps:

I know how to do it!!!!!
and for a small fee, I'll tell you.... the cost is $100 per step, paid cash up front!!!! plus it works much betta from a boat.... |
I would like to see the a real yo-yo setup. Since we have established it is legal and a good method, why not share it? Isn't that what this site is all about? sharing good ideas? It is the least you guys can do given all the good stuff you have gleened from theses pages. Drawings and material lists would be helpful too:laugha:

By next year posts will look like this..... caught a fish in the Atlantic on a hook. Getting out of control if you ask me. |
Well I am dying to know how to do it. I also respect certain secrets like the yo yo setup. I hope to one day learn it by putting in my time and earning it. Part of the beauty of fishing for striper is all the techniques that come with experience. From what I know even if you have a book explaining how to yo yo, it will still take a TON of practice to learn how to fish it correctly.

In a nutshell....
you rig a pogie like you would a ballyhoo.. shove some lead inside the belly to act as a weight and as a keel so it doesnt roll, sew it up... you make a bunch of them and then brine them(optional) the term yo-yo comes from the jigging motion you make with your pogie- hopefully it is right off the bottom.. Chumming with finely ground up pogies is the the key to success. |
I heard this all started with some RI guys in RI regitered red seacraft who would come over to the brickyard off Menemsha and yoyo tons of fish then hi tail it back to Ri via water. Seems like ten years or so was when I first heard of this from some guys I know that hang in Vineyard Sound alot. Anyone know if that is true?
|
like nebe said..
we do it with mackeral for tuna. you jam a wood skewer thru one eye all the way to the tail so the bait stays nice and strait. then stuff a 2-3-4 oz sinker down its throat.. zip tie its mouth shut.. then hook thru the top of the back arround the skewer...so it will hang perfectly stait.. this way the bait sits perfecty strait and looks like it's swimming. no roll....no bending....no nuthin...looks like it's alive but easier to catch yo-yo away ;) |

It was 1992 or 3 when that stuff was going on. I know the guys your talking about but won't name names. They were killing it on MV and bringing the fish back to RI. I remember they would come into Charlie Murats old shop in No. Smithfield with a truck load of 30's. And this was when the moritorium had just ended and a 30 was a big deal. Yo Yo was the trick. :hidin: |
go rent the video "stand up to a giant" with dennis braid.
they show you how to to rig a yo-yo ;) |
Paul before that ===we were doing it before the closure ;;;;
