Tropical Fish

I was fluke fishing in Westport Harbor yesterday morning and noticed what look like tropical fish swimming around close to the surface. Kind of yellow with vertical black stripes. They weren't very large and kind of looked like an angel fishes color scheme. Any idea what they were. Just curious. Thanks . P.

zacs 08-01-2006 01:31 PM

we get tropicals in RI every fall.

Edge Sportfish 08-01-2006 02:15 PM

Seargent Majors?

RIROCKHOUND 08-01-2006 02:17 PM

Yeah Sgt Majors... we see em in Newport this time of year hanging around the docks..
Live-line em.. good fluke size...
nah too cool to look at, even I'm not that evil :D

piemma 08-01-2006 02:45 PM

Do you have any idea what Clammer would do to them......

Sergeant Majors and other tropical damsel fish are nasty and aggressive for small fish. I've been diving & snorkeling in the tropics before and when you go near them down in the coral reef the little buggers attack. I've also had a few species in my fish tank and been bitten by them when reaching into the tank.

Tell Clammer that & see what he does to them. :behead:

& you took a long a ss ride for {OOOOOOOOO} :ss:

baldwin 08-01-2006 04:42 PM

Yeah, sounds like sergeant majors. The Gulf Stream swings closer to the coast in September, warm water pockets break off, and bring tropicals in, usually juveniles. Storms blew some of the warmer water in earlier this summer, brought those man-0-war. Those tropicals either find a power plant outflow or die later in fall. We've found butterfly fish in fish traps in Long Island Sound, baby barracuda in the Vineyard.

40# Cobia caught in Vineyard Sound this past week!! Also small Mahi Mahi just south of Nomans.

baldwin 08-02-2006 07:05 AM

Yes, the fish in the pics are definitely sergeant majors. You see huge schools of them in the Caribbean around areas that have lots of tourists. Non-touristy areas have greater diversity of species with fewer individuals of any one species.
Where tourists feed fish (sometimes cans of cheese wiz), the more aggressive fish that will eat that crap flock in and displace those that won't.

ProfessorM 08-02-2006 09:05 AM

Yup those are them.

I see a guy fluke fishing off Point Judith had a 50 lbs Cobia on Sunday the second one in a week in R.I. I've heard about. The water is really warming up now with this hot weather. Lots of small bait showing up as well.

I saw one of those or something very similar in Wareham under a mooring ball a few weeks ago. I thought I was seeing things but it looked just like the ones in the picture. It actually looked like it wanted to attack me. Water was around 78 degrees.
