Where are the best Fried Clams? Fried Oysters?

This is a serious Question....I do a lot of travelling for work and of course, fishing here in NE. I know great fishing spots from Popham beach N to Napatree Pt.

But I don't know the best places when I want fried seafood.Which is all the time if I could:drool:

Sluggoslinger 08-03-2006 04:05 PM

Woodmans, Essex. No question.

jim sylvester 08-03-2006 04:07 PM

flo's......rhode island

Canalman 08-03-2006 04:10 PM

I'm partial to Arnold's in Eastham... going there tonight actually :)

Lena's. Salisbury on 286. Crawl over to Hodgie's across the street for a 1/4 kiddie after (regular size cone is rediculous).:jump:

Larry's Clam Bar Plaistow NH.

Check the thread on the scuppers. Same subject, dozens of restaurants.

just finished a whole-belly clam plate from Cream n' Cone in West Dennis. good size clams, but i have a big problem with the prices.

now hear me out, i know everyone complains about prices, but here goes...

my quahog buyer told me last week that steamers were selling for 1.00/pound wholesale here on the cape. he also told me the guys in maine were getting .80/pound! so i walk into the restaurant and there is the typical sign...due to the high cost of clams..dadadada...blah blah blah...:rocketem:

puhlease, i don't buy any of it. but the tourists don't know any better, so why the hell not charge an arm and a leg!

For me its a toss-up between the Lobster Hut in Plymouth or Sandy's on Plymouth Beach.

If you are ever in Northern RI, try the clams at Box Seats in Woonsocket. It's nowhere near the water, doesn't even have much of a seafood menu, but the fried clams won "Best of RI" a few years back and the quality has stayed consistent.

The Essex Seafood House in Essex MA has the best fried seafood on the MA north shore in my opinion.

Fried clams

woodman in Essex
Sagamore inn Sandwich/Sagamore town line
Genes in Fairhaven

You cannot not go wrong with any of the places on Rt 133 between Ipswich and Essex known as the "Clam Highway." Woodman's, The Clam Box, Fahrnums, Essex Seafood, the Village, etc... No place else in NE compares.

Lewis' in Essex has excellent fried oysters.

I grew up in Ipswich and Woodman's fried clams in Essex have been what I judge all others againsed. Farnum's in Essex a close second because they have Fried Oysters on a regular basis.

After I started this thread, I hit the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport for a pint of Fried. These are the best fried clams I have had outside Essex and Ipswich. Their batter is excellent! The Best in Maine.

Bob's in Kittery on Rte 1 makes a great Fried Oyster. Their clams are'nt as good. Not greasy enough.

MrHunters 08-04-2006 09:39 AM

i have fond memories of farnum's as a kid....after a day at the beach or out in the boat we would go there. their chicken finger dinner plate aint to shabby either :)

but i do think woodmans is a bit better.... if you made me choose, both places are overrun with people at peak hours though... its a madhouse

In the Canal area, Lindsey's on Cranberry Highway in East Wareham is my top choice, with East Wind fish market running a close second (their scallops are better than their clams, but that's because their scallops are among the best I've ever eaten). Sandy's has slipped a lot IMO, and the fire at Penners was good riddance--I hated the batter they used. Actually, Seafood Sam's isn't bad for a chain.

MotoXcowboy 08-04-2006 11:12 AM

Chello's in warwick by the airport has "best clamcakes award for RI" banner hanging in their front entrance. I dont know how they are though..I always get the bacon cheesburgers there.

I've always liked anne's and chaplin's :kewl:

FYI dont go to CGH :yak4:

I only say this b/c I used to work the deck grill and door there a few years ago, and know/saw um...to much. :conf::yak4::yak4::yak4::conf:

Ahhhh. I was going to post that but didn't think anyone would recognize it. Fran's has good everything......great chowder too, but the fried clams rule. I live close by and frequent there often.
My mother used to talk about how it was just a window for take-out way back when......and on Fridays the line would be a block long.
