netting pogies
 

does anyone know the appropriate permit needed? not selling just making bait. also how long should i expect to leave the net out b-4 checking it?

It's usually an endorsement on you commercial boat permit

No permit needed to net live bait for personal use. The area of your net must be 200 sq ft or less. That translates to a 16' diameter cast net or smaller. Very few people can effectively use a cast net that big anyway. A 6 or 8 foot diameter net is all you need.

sounds like Niko's asking about a gillnet. I dont know MA regs, CT is $50 for 60ft x8 max length, 3" stretched net. or something like that

i'm thinking 50-100' x 10' gillnet. i've got a castnet but it's tough to drive and throw at the same time. sounds like a need a comm liscense. 200 sq' seems a little small, does anyone use this size net? thanks'paul

A good toss of a throw net will give u all the bait u need to fish the day an then some.U guys have not had bunker in yrs an all the sudden some show up an ur all lookin to use gill nets of all things to catch some.Unbelievable really.Are u prepared for the by catch gillnets produce a 2'' gill net has a 4'' diagonal openining perfect for small bass.

very few bass / mostly blues which is another reason I hate them ;; years ago I did get a huge squeteague that was driving them /but that,s what happens when despiration sets in & ya set in the daytime ::::

nib - i'm talking about a small gillnet left out for a couple of hours. the bycatch should be minimal. if you buy bait from your local bait store you still have bycatch - you just don't see it. with small spotty pods of bunker a castnet and maneuvering is difficult when solo.

NIB, just don't want to be included in the "you" on this one. I have no desire to use gill netting for that just reason. I would however like to try my luck with some live bait when its availible. I have 0 experince with a throw net or jigging for live bait... the opportunity just never presented itself in my short 4 year bass fishing life.

Fashion a snag rig.Snell 3 or 4 5/0-7/0 thin wire trebles with the barbs pinched down on some 50 lb line.Add a 2 oz banksinker to a clip on the end an a barrel swivel for the mainline connection.Cast out over the school real fast till u feel a bump then yank to the side.Let em blead out in a bucket before u tro em in the livewell.Blood clogs there gills an they can't breath.Try to touch the bait as little as possible as it removes the slime.Unslimed baits don't always get eaten as fast as nice slimmey ones.If u see a good pod u should be able to get a dozen baits in no time.Be very carefull.with the flying trebles always yank to the side an never yank when u think u are close to the boat.I know a very prominent liveliner in NJ with one eye due to a weighted treble.Take what u'll use.If we all think like this there will be enough for everyone.Good luck.

mass may be banning all gillnets very shortly.

NIB, here in the western sound alot of guys set a quick gillnet because the bunker are not always schooled tight, they mill around and a cast net would only pick up 1-2. You'd have to spend quite some time and make alot of casts to pick up a days worth of bait, even though the pogies are around.

When I lived in CT you needed a permit and you were allowed a 100ft gill net, I don't recall that a depth was specified.

I'm with NIB on this one. I tried a small (legal) gillnet in the Westport river when pogies were too thin to snag and came up with schoolies. After two sets and 6 c+r bass and 2 pogies I quit that program. I felt like "public enemy no.1"- not fun. I like the lightwt trebles over the traditional snag hook- does less damage than the big hooks= more live bait. I have heard the sabikis are an option. I have had a few pogies hit them when trying to gather Hickory shad, but didn't know if it would work consistently...but that would minimize bait mortality if it does pan out.... I haven't become good enough with a castnet to do much more than entertain my friends- I even tried to cheat with the green launcher gizmo...

I had one custom made 10 yrs ago when I the harbor. Very easy to use and only had one bluefish get in it. If you would like to try it out, let me know. If you like it, we can make a deal. I even used it from shore in the agawam, around the bridges. They work very well.

I figured as much.It just amazes me though that after finally having some bunker around.why do we do our best eliminate them all.
