How to take prop off Bravo II
Hi,
I think my prop is slipping and I need to get it off. It's a 25' Grady and I can't take it out of the water. With the outdrive all the way up it's still underwater and I can't tell how to get it off. Every other prop that I have taken off uses a cotter pin to hold the bolt. This has what looks like a very large star washer under the bolt, where one or more of the star points (they are actually more like small rectangles) pushed into recesses. With my small screw driver I could not lift the depressed small rectangles out of the recesses. Is this washer attached to the nut? I could not budge the nut with large vice grips, but that may because it is attached to the washer. I will bring a large screw driver this time and a breaker bar with a socket. I'm hoping the nut is 1 or 1.25 since those are the only large sockets I have. Any hints are greatly appreciated. john |
go get one of those plastic prop wrenches. they have a small spike on them that fits in those little holes on the star washer to bend them out. bend them all out so there not recesed into the funny looking washer, and give it a good jerk on the nut..
the springy part{with the tabs on it} comes off with the nut. the funny looking washer {the tabs fit into} stays on the shaft. dont lose the spacer behind the prop.. |

thank you very much!

And what ever you do," DON'T FORCE IT!", use a bigger Hammer!!!
Just joking, some of those have a spring washer that are lifted up against the nut. You have to look close. |

That funny looking star washer locks the nut to the shaft. You need to make sure all the tabs are bent up out of the slots in the nut. After you ge tthe nut off you should find the star washer is keyed to the shaft somehow...
