Happy eels
I have about a 20gal tank, its a pretty good set-up but I still got the occassional dead eel from either water being to warm or whatever. Seems most of the guys I've spoken to also have a dead one once in awhile. I used to keep a rock in there and they seemed to like it. The last month or so I've been keepin a plastic basket over the eels, it acts as a light but firm weight on them. when they are in their natural invorment I think their in tight areas and they feel quite comfortable. the good news is I have lost any eels since the change, I not expecting to never lose another eel but dam theres a huge differen$e.

always threw in an old burlap bag in the tank. they love that too.

Tony
how many you holding ??????????? |
I throw some 12"-14" pieces of PVC pipe in my eel tank. They love to hide in em.

Wow, now we're trying to make eels happy.:rotf3:
I think they're happy with a 7/0 in their jaw.:bl: I change the water in my tank every other day and I found that the huge ones usually die first so I try not to get them too big, I don't have any structure in the tank for them to hide and they seem just fine. |
I use my keepalive tank and they hide under the foam ring . I can have 20-30 in it and they ALL try to get under the ring. Thanks Dave I like the pipe idea a good place for them to hide and easy to get out of the way to get at the eels I will try it. Tony looks like you did not make it over last night? The tank is out back in the shed and this time of year the water gets a little hot so I will put some ice in on hot days if I am around during the day to help keep them COOL.

Mike, I can keep 30 eels... 15 has been enough for me.(no shoe strings) Dave,,these wanna jump out the tank;)
|
I grab some of the floating plants from my fish pond and throw them in the eel tank for them to hide and I also chnge the water everyother day as well.I notice even the guy at the bait shop has a few dead ones as well in his set up.it just happens.
|
I run /drip the water on overflow // throw ice in it /when I think of it //
small eels live longer // forgot all about structure {thanks] .. Last year I used the seaweed from a worm flat & it seemed to work well ;; Wacko -please pick some up on ypur daily visits to all the bait shops --- thanks ;; gotta get a shipment//this dealer price is tough with the blues around ::::::wave: |
are you guys feeding the eels to keep them alive or do they not need to eat? I'm confused....
|
Geeze, what's next PETA approved bait tanks?
I can keep 60 alive for weeks in my tank with few casualties except in the summer, I keep less alive then b/c they can't take the heat. I leave little copies of Eelquire and set up a little massage parlor in there, they love it :hihi:. I also name them... :laughs: |
Since I became a boat guy I have been keeping them in a minnow bucket at my dock. Last time I had about 18 eels in the bucket. 2 days later they were all gone. #^^^^^^& says that a parasite got into the bucket and ate them. I think the parasite had 2 legs and an outboard.

Sounds like that parasite might be named billius nolanicus :heybaby:.... I don't think any parasite could eat 18 eels in 2 days and leave no trace...
