Blitzes on peanuts
It's the stupid fishing season... Blues and bass, nothing big yet, but they are focused on the 1.5" bait and nothing else. Best results with the SMALL tsnunami and storm stuff that are really for fresh water, but can't deliver it where I want to. So am headed out to get some of Booger's casting eggs at River's edge this morning. Just keep changing gears.... what's working for you guys and gals?

RE not open til noon. Going to use larger body storm shads as the booster with little shads rigged as a teaser.

Last Friday night in the surf I did best with a 7" bomber in yellow striper pattern fished sooooooo slooooooow it was almost stationary. I also moved away from where the most intense action was and found a few fish willing to check out something different.
I have had some success trying to match the bait with flies but when they're busting right in the beach break they are very tough. Sometimes I think there is so much bait that unless the fly is right in front of their nose they just can't be bothered with it. A friend has done well with a casting egg and small peanut patterns on the Canal. I think in situations where the currents are better defined, like the canal or tidal rivers, individual fish can be targetted and tempted with the right presentation. |
I hit a spot lastnight that was loaded with peanuts and nuthin was on 'em.I fished for several hours after sundown and nothing ever showed well until probably 5 minutes after I left!
The only decent fish I've hooked into in recent weeks was also on a Bomber,6" blurple A-Salt.Unfortunately I was not able to complete the transaction. |
2 nights ago I was fished around zillions & zillions of baby peanuts and other bait...caught 8 keepers in 3hrs on, black and clear jointed bombers. Took home a 41" and 35"...interestingly enough...they had absolutely no fish in their bellies...just a ton of green crabs.

I was fishing yesterday on the Cape, Small bass and freight train blue fish
I had my drag socked down to get them in fast (due to the seals) and I had a few on that just took off with my drag screaming. |
MotoX
That's interesting because the other night I got the impression there were two different groups of fish swimming around. The ones that were keyed in on the tiny bait and another group who were looking for bigger stuff. Pure conjecture on my part but your autopsy lends some support. Or, maybe the fish that hit the plugs had just moved in to the area? |
Try fishing a floating or very slow sink needle with a white teaser out in front of it ..Teaser can be small white rubber on 5/0 siswash hook(crazy glue gel).. or just white bucktail tied on up to 7/0 hook .. I use to buy the single hooks in a package that way or you can tie it yourself with very limited skills. You'll get fish on both the needle and the teaser,, hopefully some larger on the needle... this combo cast great too .

bass on peanuts
Kastmasters are always good for fishing around peanuts, as are larger poppers ... at times something completely different can get the attention of fish focused on one particular bait and I have done very well with poppers when nothing else seems to work while the bass are pushing peanuts up against the banks ... for fly guys, try Clousers, not a peanut but will get below the bait and can be productive, or use a 50/50 as well.
