Well, Friday night I cut the rest of the motorwell out. I may re-use the engine box as a splashwell if I decide to go the notched transom route.
Then, this afternoon I pulled out the steering cables, cut all the dash wires and sawzalled the bulkheads that create the cabin. Sawzalls are fun.. So I says, Krispy, go for it :bo:
And by 7pm the the top was chopped!
My neighbores stopped to talk as they walked down to their dock and when they came back the boat went from cuddy to CC :jump1:

No I am going back to a fresh water cooled I/O, I can't justify cutting that transom up for an outboard, IMO the lines are much better and it is a safer boat as an I/O it will be trailered so no worries

Which engine / drive? V6/Alpha?

Nope just a 4cyl Mercruiser FWC hydraulic steering 140 hp they are already stern heavy, the tank will go in the floor and moved forward to combat some of the stern weight. I hope to get 3-4 mpg out of it, economy is key, if the little diesels weren't 13k I would opt for one of them

I REALLY like the i/o lines, but my boat desperately needed the floor raised, the scuppers were completely underwater. Keeping the i/0 and redoing the floor around the engine box woulda been a pita. Also want to shave alot of lbs of this boat, the current volvo is 650+lbs, an outboard will save over 200lbs in the back. If I can afford to do the floor w/ composites, along with all the glass Ive removed on the rear end, I hope it will sit a little better.
And I will be keeping the SC in the water, sometimes grounded at low tide

A little birdy mentioned something to me about some Penske board last night. When he knows more and gets some more detail I'll let you know as far as a floor / transom composite.

Does it need a transom? I'm guessing yes because of the age but maybe it had been done recently...

I think (and I am certainly not an expert) that if you focus on solving why the scuppers were below the water, then you will not have to raise the deck. What comes to my mind is wet/waterloged wood & foam.

Also, you don't want to change the way the orginal weight was distributed tooooo much, as it could significantly alter the ride of the boat.

Just some thoughts, I still think you are doing great work, and I am excited to watch the progress. I am sort of living vicariously through you, as I bailed on a project this year due to lack of time (new baby, etc...) and wimped out and bought a new boat.

John, so far the transom looks good in all the holes, its not wet. There is some delamination at the top between the 2 sheets, but believe its neither structural and could be corrected easily. But theres a big hole from the i/o, and if Im gonna hang an outboard there, Im considering replacing the whole transom instead of filling the hole to err on the side of caution. John, Id defintely be interested about the Penske
Zacs, the scupper issue is inherent to the SC 20' design. Either it was the through floor scuppers that didnt drain well unless underway, or the thru transom design like mine, thats just plain to low. None the the foam on my 20', which is just between the outer stringers and hull sides, are wet. The stringers are hollow and the transom isnt waterlogged.
There is alot of weight distribution to consider, lighter rear, moving the fuel tank forward and possibly replacing for a larger one and having a large livewell aboard and having removed all the forward cuddy weight.

Thanks for the correction, I hope you don't mind, I am just kind of tyring to look out for things you may not have considered. not trying to be negative, I think it is a good project, and you will have a great boat when you are done. Will you paint it or have someone else do it?

Zacs, I know what you were saying and appreciate any thoughts and outside perspectives :kewl:
Most boats that have those issues are waterlogged. SC was just a mis-design.
I will have to paint the whole boat in the end. The cap will need to be reformed to create the lip. I was thinking of doing a combo of roll & tip (product undecided) for the smooth parts of the cap and floor, and use the Durabak for the non-skid areas and on the inside of the hull sides to help hide the glass pattern w/o a ton of sanding and fairing.
Ill give painting the outer hull a shot, Im thinking bassboat gold flake style :hs:

MH you can't think of the work or you would never get motivated, I tend to think of it as my blank canvas I can alter,modify the boat the way I want, not a cookie cutter factory boat, I will know how every part of this boat will be put together and too me when I am 15 miles offshore in this little bugger I will have no worries as to what is under my feet:btu:

Regarding the scupper issue, I left 3 1/2" from the sidewall of the boat to the edge of the existing floor I am going to pad my stringers 3/4" and lay my new floor to the edge of the existing channel this will give me a 3/4" channel around the perimeter of the floor. Also on my last boat Hydra Sports Vector my floor drains had ping pong balls which would allow water out and not in, although they were set in the floor (vertical) and the Sea Craft will be horizontal I don't see why they wouldnt work. Also my floor has tubes that drain into the bilge I am thinking of doing away with these ????? I will trailer so I don't forsee a problem but will try and adress the issue a bit

Yeah, everyone says that about these types of projects.
Its fun if you WANNA do it, sucks if you HAFTA do it.
Pulled all the floor off, removed the foam and some more general cutting and chopping. Found one of the stringers is weak and cracked at the top. I think the P.O. drilled some lug screws for the seats straight into the top of the stringer and it broke over time. No big deal, an easy fix
This week I'll finish removing where the liner was epoxied onto the hull sides. It needs to be chipped where the joint meets and is coming off fairly clean. Also cleaning up the stringers where the bedding compound attached the stringers and floor. Finish cutting and removing the front "casting deck" area. I will be leaving the very forward section for now.
Of course when I decided I was gonna remove the cap, I checked underneath it, and its glassed to the hull sides :splat: One more piece to cut for removal. Then the boat will get a thorough sanding inside.
I got some tips for pulling the outdrive, maybe I can get it all out over the next week.
Hurt my back, so things are going a little slow :bc:

Made a little progress yesterday, got the pieces for the floor shaped and got 90% of my cracks ground out even filled a few with some mat and resin. What do you think of the water channel around the I/O housing?? Keep it or lose it?
