feeding penned herring
does anybody out there have any input on how to keep penned herring well fed? am interested in keeping some fish but am not sure on what to feed them once penned. any suggestions?
|
I just feed the to the bass :D
|
I read an article in Salt. Sport. May 2002 about feeding your pen. This guy used ground up fish scraps frozen in balls and commercial trout and coy pellets soaked in bunker oil.
|
Fish pellets? There was an article in SWS last month or the month before that a Jersey guy said what he did to feed the fish... I think Trayder has it burned into memory
|
WOW JOHN, THATS SCARY!!! Look at the post times;)
|
Fiddle-
I was told by a wise woman from the sea side that smoked turkey scraps does the trick :laughs: Where do you guys imagine one can purchase these pellets? I have a feeling dem buckies a hungry!! |
Start at a place that sells fish ponds, they also will sell the fish(coy) and the pellets. Maybe they can point you in the right direction if they don't sell em.
|
Watch out how much you feed them. Each time you feed them the Ammonia will build up and you must change at least 30% of the water. make sure that all uneaten food is removed
|
You can get the fish pellets at those pet supply stores. They are a common item.

Scotch, great minds think alike, then there's us - the exceptions to the rule ;) ...
MikeCC - let's say that they, umm, have natural filtration and water replacement :D |
herring
I have a pond in my yard w/ a stream that flows into it.
I havent tried but how long do you guys think they would last if i just put them in the baskets like i do when I get to the canal and just leave them in the flow of the brook. P>S> stay away from harwich it looked like 10 schools were having a field trip there this weekend rocks thrown in the water kids everywhere. |
This is a great message board. My compliments to the admin!
Does anyone know if the herring run at the canal has started to peter out? Heading down Thursday (fingers crossed :). thx... |

herring
so if I find such a place where I put them
(just out of curiosity I mean ) what would make a pen some chicken wire hmmmm. |
I have an article from the May 2002 Saltwater Sportsman. It is an article about a guy in New Jersey who keeps herring and pogies in a pen all season long. He said he got his materials from Memphis Net & Twine Company, www.memphisnet.net , and 888-674-7638. He used soft netting, 1/2"square, no.9 soft-nylon twine. He made the frame out of pvc pipe I believe
I will try to scan the article and out it up for you. |

i made a pen out of 1" pvc tubing for the frame and wrapped it with minnow seine from cabelas...the minnow seine is coated and soft so the fish can rub against it and not hurt themselves... |
