Interesting info......

As I and Alan Cordts happily slogged into the surf on Monday Night he informed me that he had recently been notified of one of his tagged fish returns. Alan tags a number of fish each year and has for years. His most notable was tagging a large bass on the Vineyard on late fall night a few years back and himself catching the same fish again on the same night a year to the day later about a 100 yards from where he caught it the year before.

Anyway, a nice bass he tagged in Quicks Hole last mid-November was recently caught, measured, recorded and the tag recovered and released in the Merrimack River. That's pretty cool!

I caught a schoolie within sight of the spot that it had been tagged almost one year to the day later. I was astonished at that habit and wondered how common it was. Quite common it seems..

What are the odds on catching the same fish one year later to the day? It is nice of him to undertake this endeavour.

that is the most unlucky fish i've ever heard of.

I did some tagging for a couple of years and got the return info back and it was pretty interesting. A lot of the fish stayed around the Merrimack where they were tagged for the summer, others came back the next year to be caught again. I only had two years of tagging and return data - it would be nice to see what happened to all of those fish the last 8 years. Another cool thing was that some of the fish tagged in the spring in the Merrimack were recovered as far south as North Carolina the following winter and others recaptured in VA, MD and other northern Atlantic states.

Catching the same fish - the fish that you tagged, in almost the exact same spot one year later is amazing.
