trying to decide on a rod to match with a vs250, looking into picking up an avid series, ASRS100MH, how does st. croix compare to lamiglas or other rod manufactures? as far as quality and price.

The quality is there and they are priced about the same as Lami's Surf and Jetty line however Lamiglas offers a lifetime warranty, St Croix is either 2 or 5 years. Something to think about.

I fish two St. Croix Avid Surf Rods (9' and 10', medium power), two Loomis Surf Rods, and a Lami Arra -- and my Avid rods are my favorites among them, although neck & neck with the Loomis...

The Avid Surf rods are great rods.

St Croix makes a quality product. If you prefer fast taper rods, go with St. Croix. If you prefer a medium or parabolic taper, Lamiglas is the one you want.

What are the differences between the different tapers and where,when,or why do they have advantages/disadvantages betweeen each other?

Fast taper rods bend in the top quarter, or top third. Medium taper rods bend in the top half. Slow, or parabolic taper rods bend to the reel seat.

Basically, it's a matter of personal preference, but some (tho not all) fast taper rods aren't the greatest when it comes to fighting fish. If a fast taper rod has a good strong butt section with a lot of lifting power, like an All Star or Batson SU, it fights a fish very well. Fast taper rods, as a general rule, are easier to load and cast. Medium or parabolic taper rods are more forgiving and are better if you want a rod for general use. Fast taper rods aren't really a great choice for pencil poppers.

Just bought my first St Croix today. 8 1/2 footer medium power, mod-fast action, sc" & sc"W graphite. any idea what I should have paid for this rod? I plan to put a Penn 6500s on it.
