Problem w/Rigged eels.
Whenever I rig them, I guess I am not securing the heads correctly. After 30 min or so, the eel slipps down the hook and looks like crap. How do you guys keep the eel from sliding down the hook?
|
use a sewing needle and throw a few stitches through the eel, and through the eye of your hook.
|
joe,
are you tying it off?? |
You are wrapping around the neck , just behind the head but in front of the hook curve? If yes , they should never slide any further than down to where the hook hits this heavy head wrap.
more comonly , the tail hook pops out the butt hole do to the eel riding up the hook. |
i have the same problem

Yup. I was thinking about doing what Vic suggested. Semed like it would do the trick. |

This would makes sense too. Thanks guys. I knew we kept you old guys around for a reason. |
The eel should not fall apart unless touched by a fish. Let me assume you are using the correct hooks, which would be 8/0 to 10/0 siwash. Wrap some solder about 1/4" down the shank from the eye, heat the solder so it forms to the hook. Slide the eel's head over this ball of solder, then tie the head off on either side of the ball so the eel does not slide in either direction. The tail hook should never pop out either because the line between the front and back hooks should be tight within the body. Then sew the eye of the rear hook to either side of the vent hole. This is how I was taught by Nate Piazza and John Curran, perhaps the best rigged eel fishermen out there besides Al B.

OLD GUYS????????
He said OLD GUYS!!!!! Oh man I don't know if I should kill him or kill myself??? Maybe I just better ignore it!! :) |
U can do the same thing by rappn a big not of thread on the hook with Size E rodbuilding thread an glue it.
i heard some like to use a large swivel conected to the eyelet an tuck it in the eels mouth an tie over that but never tried it. |

I solder a piece of copper wire about 1/8 in down from the eye of the hook. Tie the eel off in front of the copper wire and wrap some thread or floss over your tie off.

Mustad makes a hook for tuna fishing with a wieght on the shank they come 1/8 an 1/4 anyone ever try these.I look at the package later.

A small black zip tie around the eel just at the bend will work too. Easy enough to do in the surf when needed.
