Newbie
Hello all, this is my first post. I found this site looking for information on plug building. I live in Connecticut and fish the sound between New Haven and Bridgeport. I basically only use plugs, and have become good friends with an older gentleman at the boat ramp who makes his own plastic plugs. They work pretty well, but he doesn't make floating plugs. We were talking and he said he would be willing to make some out of wood, but didn't have much information on them.
Seeing as he doesn't have access to the internet, I told him I would do some searching for him. Thats how I ended up here. I've searced on this site, and on the internet and haven't been able to find a site or post that has a good basic overall feel on wood types, designs etc. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? After seeing all the posts, I think I've been sucked into trying to make some myself. Thanks in advance. |
If you search for a more specific aspect I am sure you will find what you need here. BTW welcome. Paul

Welcome Wo Show. You already got some great advice. You also might consider buying a plug kit from one of our sponsors here. It will give you an idea on how to build one without jumping full force into all the tools etc. that you will need.

I fish mostly topwater now. Been having great luck with Gags poppers, Striper Strikes, and my newest favorite, Power Poppers by Luhrs. What type of wood would I use to duplicate these? Thanks in advance.

Some of those are maple (I think) but you'd be wise to start with pine or basswood and just put a slug of lead between the belly and tail hook.

Thanks guys. I'll see if I can get my hands on some and see how they turn out. Man, I can see how this can become addicting!
