Slipknot tagged another sizable fish at the ditch this AM....I'll let him fill you in, but it was bigger than his last large...

Anyway Bruce....tell me about that spinning rod from Breakaway you had this AM. I am thinking about an alternate to my conventional stuff, as a change of pace. Your setup looked nice and light, but had enough muscle to do what you needed done today. Length, model #? $$?......was that a new Mitchell you had it paired with....? J.P. has a Breakaway too....but his is a larger setup, no?

Harry, same rod as Jim's.

AllStar 1209, it can be built conv. but mine is a Breakaway spinner factory job. It will toss a horse, as JP says it's a pool cue with guides. I think they under rate it at something like 3-6 but it should be 4-12 ounces. I get 300-400 feet casts with 4-5 ounce jigs on that spinner. I hope to use conv. more this year if I get used to reeling on the right.

I double checked the drag on my Mitchell Neptune 7500 big yellow reel when I got home and it was set at 10 lbs as I suspected. Even though that fish was thin, it had shoulders and took some line.

The smaller keeper Joey brought in had a sea bass in it :eek:


Harry, you'd be pleased with the 1209, alot of guys jig the ditch with it also, some like the Lami 126mh something.

Somehow I thought it was a tad smaller...maybe I'll toss a jig 1/2 dozen times or more with Jim's and see if there is a benefit for me, namely lightness and less energy expended (heck, I'm gettin' old)....

Where do you recommend buying it? Quanto dinero?


I like my Lamiglass GSB Mike wrapped for me....plenty o' muscle, and plenty of distance with the Mag Elite....but I always have my eyes open for a way to make a 4 or more hour shift at the ditch easier...

Incidentally, don't be shy about mentioning here that this AM's bass you landed just about nicked 30# (29# by that Berkley digital scale, which who knows, may have shorted you a bit!)....

I got my spinner from Mike T for somewhere around 160 I believe.
Ask him if he has it in conventional. I'd like to get one as well, but for now I have a beautiful Loomis from Saltheart you will see me with next time we see eah other there :) You ditch guys better get going if you don't want me to clean up in the ditch Competition again this year, right John ;)

it comes in conventional and spinning, we stock both. we also carry every production breakaway. even the new 12'3"conv.

Just my opinion but I would think twice about changing to a spinner. Its definitely a rod that's perfect for heavy jigging and the spinners will manhandle a 30 but what about a fifty? I'd stay with a conventional.

Anyway , as Mike said , it can be made either way. I think its a perfect rod to match with a BG7000CL for tossing 4 and 5 OZ jigs.


Slip , did you get another biggie on the skins?

Saltheart: The 1209 Breakaway/ Mitchell Neptune ( spinning) was the gear Blong used to haul his 45+#er out of the Ditch last year. Tough to do , yes - but doable.

BTW, Slip: Harrible weighed that fish @ 29#. If Harry says it nicked 30# then he's right. If you weighed that fish at home after you left and it came in at 28# it's because I bled it before ya took it home . Fish blood has weight - and a 30#er has a lot of blood.

Also BTW, Slipknot's fish bent the hook up on the jig to about a 45
degree angle. That's a lot of pressure! Can't believe
leader didn't snap.

Saltheart, yes it came on a skinjig from last years model, and like JP said the hook was bent but I didn't lose the fish, don't ask me how I didn't cause the hook fell right out of the mouth once beached. It was in the roof of her mouth so maybe it never penetrated the bone.

I don't have time to check the charts rights now but if heading west I'll be on my pedestal. If its heading east I'll be near the sub monument.


The only skin jigs we have at all right now are some we made for ourselves. I can spare a few but not a lot. Lots of people want more. Maybe we can make an extra hundred more in the next couple of weeks.


Those jigs all have 7/0 Mustad hooks. If they are starigfhtening its just a bad angle on the hookup etc. I'll trade a couple with 8/0 hooks but the draw back with 8/0 is getting the skin over them, The 8/0 are much bigger.


JP , what was the state of the current when Bong landed his fish?

Saltheart & Slip, on the jigs - are the hooks bending where the lead ends? Saltheart - remember what we saw at that presentation about longer jigheads and fulcrum point bending the hook - just wondering if it was the same thing, or is Slip bending them on the buisness end of the hook ;) ....

slipknot is just too damn strong !!!!!! hes got arms like tree trunks for heavens sake .

them mustard 7/0 are pretty strong but as John noted it could be possible they bend right where the lead starts .

Ok,ok - Blong nailed it in a slack. Looks like it's up to me to land a 50 in raging current to bring some credibility to spinning gear.

Watch yourself if you're carrying those skinjigs on ya. A lot of guys noticed what Slipknot had at the end of his leader. I'm guessing you won't find a skin jigs for sale anywhere near the canal. :p

Saltheart, tide changes to east at 8:12 pm. :) so depends on your arrival time I guess.

The hook was a little bent near the tip, a little bent to the side so like suggested from an angle stressing it. The 7/0 is fine, it just was trying to stab into bone is all it may have been. Big fish break things.

I don't see much difference in the amount of drag I can apply with the 7500 Neptune and the amount I can do with the Big Game, either way I would think the leader would give. but hopefully not.
It's a race to see who gets a 50 on a spinner from the ditch, I hope Angler #1 gets to witness the event JP. CYA in the am ;)

These particular jigs have the hook on the end of about 2 inches of stainless airplane cable. very difficult to create a fulcrum with the wire like it is , its easier for the fish to bend the hook when the hook is embedded into the jig.


Its not the drag limit I worry about with a spinner. Its line wear. Also on the BG you can use spectron which is tougher and more wear resistant than anything I know of. You can't use spectron on a spinner. It just doesn't work. 65 pound whiolash is good line but its not spectron.


I agree with Chris. Slipknot has tree trunk arms. His little finger is bigger than my thumb. He's just too damned strong if he can bend a 7/0 Mustad! :)

Sorry - forgot about the cable attachment, that would certainly eliminate a leverage problem, and yep, forgot about the strength of our resident Knuckle Dragger A.K.A. Slipnot. Man palms a 7000CL and it disapears ....
